Medical-Surgical nursing is a monster nurse specialty...this book made me really enjoy it. Throughout the semester and lugging this huge thing around, i uncovered the diseases and disorders that can occur throughout the different systems of the body. The red light situations that we'd want to look out for, but most importantly the nursing interventions needed. the organization of the material makes this very intimidating book, reader friendly. Plus, NCLEX practice questions are embedded throughout the readings so that you can test your knowledge on recently read material. Bonus for those who might not know...this is an elsevier published book and if you go to their website, you get access to free resources that come with the text. You just have to create an account (unless you already have one through your nursing school like i do) but you'll get even more resources to study from :))

Awful
This is required reading for me but sheesh could they have assigned a worse text? This text is so densely packed with wordy information that no mere mortal could ever retain this much info or even take away a good understanding of it. It would help if important points of information were bulleted but it is practically giant walls of text from cover to cover. Yes, it has some highlighted charts, but again it is so densely packed it makes synthesizing the main points so time consuming. Trying to find the answer to a question or concern is like finding a needle in a haystack with this text. Worse yet, the text does not adequately prepare students for the tests designed for the text book. The textbook does not show the student how to apply nursing applications to health situations though the text's test questions test on that sort of knowledge. There is a definite disconnect between what is being taught and what is being expected of students.Another point of contention is despite this being a very wordy tome on pathophysiology and the science of nursing, many of the text's explanations about those processes were poorly explained and required me to seek outside information to actually understand the topic. For example the section on ABGs was confusing and was definately not adequate to understand the topic despite the fact that it was covered very thouroughly in the test questions for that chapter. I augment the material in this book with online material and videos to understand each topic because this text just doesn't cut it.This text is so freaking heavy at 20+ lbs that I dread lifting it or taking it to class. Overall it is just not a very good textbook.

Great Book.. Easy to Understand
This was the required textbook for my Med Surg classes, and I absolutely loved it. It is so concise and covers the patho and nursing interventions so well. I also loved all of the charts and diagrams. Some people in my class complained that the chapters were a little bit too in-depth for what we needed to know as nurses, but I thought that it just made the information more clear. The main drawback to this book is the size. It's a huge book if you get the hard copy of it! I got the Kindle book and it was much easier to take to class. Highly recommended!

Great nursing text
This book is required for the nursing program I'm in. Even though it's required I still think it's a great book for anyone trying to get their RN. I like how the book shows key point to remember in various boxes through the chapters. The online access can be helpful especially in your first semester.Another great Med Surg text is Medical-Surgical Nursing : Clinical Management for Positive Outcomes by Jane Hokanson Hawks and Joyce M. Black. This book was suggested by my clinical instructor and I find that it is helpful when you're sick of reading Iggy.

BIG BOOK!
This book has soooooooo much information. I don't know how many times i feel asleep reading this book. As a nursing student i felt that there is way to much "extra" information that is mixed in with the information I need to learn for nursing. I have read paragraphs only to find out that the amount of usable information could be summed up into half the material read.

Happy Nursing Student!
This textbook is very user friendly in the kindle version, and is an easy read. Kudos! The only thing I have not cared for is the setup for scrolling through the chapters in the table of contents. I would prefer that when I open the table, it start where I left off last instead of gong back to chapter one each time. I would strongly recommend to any of my classmates.
