Pretty good, if it shows serious lacking in the intellect of the characters.
Brief:I enjoyed the alternative culture with the whole eastern/persian blending of concepts like Samurai honor and european knighthood.Pros:Decent Action SequencesMorgan Freeman!Clive Owen!Cool environmentsNeat worldExcellent actingVery Samurai Meets Chivalry meets PersiaCons:Everyone in power is dumb, yo.The pretense is a little lightweightI didn't feel a genuine connection between characters.Recommended for people who like:BraveheartRob Roythe Last SamuraiGladiatorTroyCrouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon.47 RoninDetails:The video is great, and the acting and atmosphere is great. I felt however that not only was the emperor kind of a dunce, but so too was Morgan & Clive's characters. I suppose without the blatant lack of insight or strategic thought then there wouldn't have been the story we saw in the movie, which while well told, wasn't original in any way, as it is quintessentially the tale of the 47 ronin. I think I would've preferred to see a story where, instead of a "vengeance/ronin flick" it would have been interesting and fresh to see Clive cut down the emperor during Bartok's trial, and the story be about the aftermath of THAT kind of crazy.Overall, it was good. I just didn't see what the point of Lord Bartok's position was during the trial or what he really was hoping to accomplish. I also didn't understand how Clive's honor wasn't broken when he carried out Bartok's order, but I guess for most of us honor is maybe more of a set of guidelines than rules per say? (shrug) I'm sure others would disagree. It was good, it was well thought out for the most part. I have to say the Minister's character probably had the most genuine involvement with their personality and expression, while the rest of the characters didn't offer much to connect to. The Minister was a pretty messed up puppy, but I felt like out of all the characters, he was the most emotionally invested for the audience, excepting maybe the commander who was able to very subtly reflect strong character. I liked him (the Minister's Commander) more than Clive or his buddies, and more than Freeman's character, because essentially Morgan was just playing his normal type of character. So, without too many spoilers - it's absolutely worth watching if you're into any of the movies above, and I would've been more disappointed seeing it in theaters because triple the cost and twice the headache would've magnified the deficits. Watching it at home, on my nice 40+" TV was well worth the money.

A time of greed, corruption and honor... I wish they'd whack the Emperor!
I agree that this movie ranks way up there. Why did I never hear about it at the theaters? I know that I kept saying to myself, " Why not just take out the Emperor?" There was enough intensity, excellent costuming and set design, and the dialogue fit the setting -- not overly done or extemporaneous. Not sure why the character played by Freeman just didn't admit he was attacked first. That may have changed things. The bad guy reminded me of Christopher Walken although a little effeminate. The Emperor -- why did he need council from a political climber instead of his First Council? There were plot points that just served the plot, like the death of the First Council by what...old age? Convenient. No suspicion of poisoning?None of the above made this movie any less enjoyable than the 300 or the recent remake of 47 Ronin. Clive Owen brought his intensity home in this one. Bravo! It also yet once again is about power, and the fear of losing it; what it takes to keep it and crush those who would rise up against oppression. I continued to hope someone would just take out the Emperor. That would end a lot of the problems he perpetuates.

Thank you Clive Owen, and Morgan Freeman, for this. :-)
I'm writing this response/review on October 27th, 2018. Donald Trump is President, and the world that he has helped create, has gone insane. Our President inspired and motivated a bomber to send pipe bombs to his political enemies, and has inspired another 'foreigner-hating' acolyte to perpetrate a massacre in a Jewish synagogue. Around him, advisers say nothing, and his supporters enable him. Dignity. Honor. Decency. Discipline. Greatness. These are words that he and his kind will never know--in spite of the fact that they hold power, over the rest of us.This is why I am so grateful for this movie. It is not perfect (the slow motion action scenes can be a little lame, and the dialogue a bit ponderous) but, unexpectedly, it is profound. The last knights demonstrate dignity, honor, decency, self-disclipline, and greatness, as they execute a mission to bring about justice for the murder of their master. As the story unfolds, we see the sacrifices they and their families must make. There are plot twists after plot twist, as one obstacle and then another is placed in front of them.In the end, we see the knights act in a manner that is congruent with their noble character. They act against the decadent, cynical self-interest of those in power. I observe parallels with the America I see today, and am reminded by this movie of what real leadership looks like, when guided by real virtue. I am reminded, because I realize I cannot see real leadership, guided by real virtue, as I look around today.
