Farewell to Shady Glade

My daughter (age 43) has always adored Bill Peet and his goldmine of books, and I think Shady Glade remains her favorite. Her daughter is almost three and she felt it was time for her to get immersed in the magical world of Bill Peet so of course she picked Shady Glade as the perfect introduction. And naturally Maudie loves it, too. Peet is so great at slipping a good cause or message into his tales and Glade features a great one. All the animals interact and confer which fascinates Maudie and there's also a railroad train involved which thrills her no end! Peet was a masterful artist and storyteller and my daughter and I both feel Shady Glade is one of his very best stories in his massive legacy of wonderful books for kids.

When I was young this was one of my favorite Bill Peet books, but now... I think this might be his best one. There is a timelessness about it that kids and folks of all types can relate to. Farewell has wonderful artwork and a well thought out story of animal survival. Also, anyone interested in Drawing with Colored Pencils should check this Book out, Bill is a master of this illustration style. A Fun Children’s picture book with depth if you need it. Farewell to Shady Glade is a classic!

We love Bill Peet. This is a good book and the illustrations are great as always. If you are new to Bill Peet though there are others of his that outshine this one. But still a sweet story of a group of animals forced to find a new home.

This is a long book for littles. I loved it and my 5 YO is getting there. I think more suited for 6+. Good story with a theme of sticking together.

Bill Peet has been a family favorite author since 1978. I read them to my son in the 70's. Bought every one I could find for my grandchildren, and now am purchasing for that same son's newly arrived twin boys. I recently asked my first three grandchildren if they still had their Bill Peet books and discovered that they plan to NEVER (said emphatically) get rid of them. In addition, they are still read because they take them on babysitting jobs to read to their charges who also LOVE them.

Love Bill Peet books. Surprised I could find the cassette with book anymore. I give these as baby gifts.

I remember this book from my childbood and gladly share it with a new generation.

I originally discovered this over 25 years ago at a little local library when my own children were 3 and 6, and wanted to buy it for my grand-daughters. It's a little bit old for them yet, but will keep and is just as warm and charming as I remembered it.

This is a great book I used it to help teach the importance of being aware of our impact on the environment in my grade three science class. Any books by this author are very good.

A gentle way to teach kids about taking care of our animal habitats. Also a beautiful story of resilience.
