Terrible
I would rather get a double root canal or smear honey on my body and run naked through Yellowstone National Park than finish reading this lackluster effort by Peter Robinson. The weak story is not helped by the author needlessly interjecting his political opinions on Brexit, the USA and President Trump. The politics is totally unnecessary for the development of plot or character and, for my taste, is out of place in a book I pick up for recreational reading. I am done with Peter Robinson and Inspector Banks. Some of the earlier books were entertaining, but this one is boring and annoying.

Disappointed
I am a great fan of Peter Robinson's DCI Banks series - I always pre-order his books and await delivery date with anticipation. However, I am now half way through this current one and, to be honest, am finding it a bit of a slog. It is very slow and somewhat disjointed. The parallel Zelda storyline is very distracting from the main thrust of the book - I think it could have been incorporated in the overall storyline, somehow, rather than having a life of its own. I also feel that Peter, entitled as he is to his own views, is becoming a little too political - I think he should realise that perhaps not everyone shares his views and although he has the right to air them, I don't believe his books are the place to do that. Anyhow, I will finish the book - it could get better - I can but hope!

A crashing bore. . .
As an avid fan of Peter Robinson’ s book I was very disappointed in this tedious novel and the political comments were quite out of place. I read for entertainment and injecting politics truly ruins the mood.

Lost the plot in this one
I'm sorry but I loved Banks and the books but this one is a bore - it rambles on and on with badly drawn characters and to use a bad pun, one "plods" though it. I haven't finished it as yet as I am bored by it - not something I have ever said about the series.

So disappointed
Being a Robinson fan, and owning all his books, this latest novel was truly a crashing bore. Not a compelling story line, not any interaction with the characters as before, not a very good conclusion, and the protagonist was, well, ho-hum. Hope the next one is better, and he's not burned out!

Tired of darkness.
I didn't get very far into the book before throwing it across the room. In the midst of so much going on in the news, who needs sex trafficking and murdered children.Robinson is one of my favorite authors and I've read all his books till this one. But I don't need this kind of tragedy in my mind and heart right now.Perhaps another book, later.

Robinson end
I have clearly read too many of his books. I know his music choices(tedious) his favorite drinks and his story lines seem to be repetitious. Good bye dear Banks good bye.

First disappointing Peter Robinson book!
I've always loved Peter Robinson's books. This one was disappointing. The mystery itself as well as the writing.

Frankly - awful
It is not often I don’t finish a book but I gave up on this one quite quickly. I have read every book in the series and they have gradually become more tedious and hectoring until this one I found unreadable. If an author needs to use 2 chapters on explanatory dialogue setting the scene there is definitely something wrong. The constant references to current affairs, most notably Brexit, appeared to be an opportunity for the author to bang a personal, opinionated, drum which I certainly don’t need from pleasure reading. The characters are unbelievable and Zelda is unlikeable and a distraction. And, to bang a repeated drum of my own, the constant music references have really started to grate. I’ve stuck with you till now, Peter Robinson, but this is the end of what has been a long association. I think Banks needs to retire gracefully.

Peter Robinson has lost the plot big time
This is his worst book ever! I found it muddled, tedious and boring and disliked most of the characters. I particularly disliked Zelda and skipped most of her sections. The Albanian Mafia and drugs story is not to my taste at all. Peter Robinson please keep your political opinions to yourself, I struggled to finish this book and will probably never buy any more, shame as I enjoyed all the others.

Have loved the series but hated this one
D I Banks has been a great part of my reading life and I have read every single one, buying most in advance from Amazon.Peter has been in my opinion the number one crime writer and the series has been brilliant. However the last couple of books have been a let down and this one, I hate to say, is a stinker. It is boring and filled with political innuendos regarding both Donald Trump and Brexit to such an extent that I feel the BBC may be helping to write the book. This book smacks of complacency and like us all when we get to a certain age I feel that DI Banks must now retire.Any first time reader here ( like a boxing fan watching Ali`s last fight) would get such a bad impression and be unaware of the brilliance that preceded it.Sorry Peter but this book is rubbish.

Is this really DCI Banks?
I have read, and enjoyed, the last 25 books. If this had been the first I would have stopped there. The author has spent all his energy in promoting his Brexit - or anti Brexit ideas I should say, and lost the drive that made the other books so good. No, thank you, Mr Robinson, if I want a Political Harangue there are plenty to choose from, I do not need to download one onto my Kindle. A total waste of money, and if this is the way DCI Banks is going he can go without me. An Author should never intrude in to book. It breaks the spell, the magic that good writing brings - you are in the story, in the setting, to suddenly come across totally irrelevant words tears the curtain & turns the lights on - the magic has gone. As if a playwright walked on to the stage during a death scene & re-adjusted the blankets.

Propaganda
This should not be the place to air political views but as the author had one of his characters declare, that because of Brexit, Britain has changed and no longer welcomes foreigners, I feel the need to comment. This book is probably read the world over and may give a wrong impression about Britain and Brexit. The majority of us respect people of all faiths and cultures and foreigners will always be welcome. Because of this I didn’t enjoy the book as much as I usually enjoy the Banks stories.
