Love this book! A really great source on cartomancy--using an easily accessible deck of playing cards for divination and simple spell-work. Easily organized to help one learn the meanings of each card for readings to include: the pips and court cards (people or their personalities or qualities) and lots of intriguing history and facts. The spell instructions are varied--for almost every purpose under the Sun and easy to do with items you can get right from a grocery or craft store. Southern lore, hoodoo and root-work predominate in these spells...you don't need to pay anyone to do your spells for you when you can do them yourself--this is much more ethical and teaches you how to set your own intentions! Highly recommend this book if you want to learn these secrets and a great addition to one's spiritual library!

A Deck of Spells: Hoodoo Playing Card Magic in Rootwork and Conjure by Professor Charles Porterfield is a necessary addition to anyone interested in learning about the mystery of playing cards. Porterfield, a published author, popular radio personality on the Now you Know show, is not only a brilliant teacher and mentor to thousands world wide, he is also one of the best intuitives in the world. A Deck of Spells contains many spells in an easy to understand manner. The book is informative, powerful, and excellently written. Along with many spells, Porterfield has included a brief history of playing cards. He explains the different types of decks including, The French deck, the German deck, the Latin deck and the Spanish deck. Porterfield includes interpretations of divinatory meanings for the reading of playing cards. If you want to learn how to read playing cards for yourself or others, this book is a must have.

I enjoyed this book because it teaches you how to read playing cards as well as how to use and incorporate each card into spell work. It’s not a long book but it holds so much information in it that it will be constantly used as a resource for many years to come.

Expected card deck of spells. This is a book. Nicely done with cartomancy history included. Nice to know alongside the Lenormand, Gypsy Witch, Conjure Cards.

Couldn’t be any more simple.

I’ve got a neat old deck of cards that found their way to me a couple of years ago. They have a vibe. An energy. They’re asking to be used for purposes like those within the pages of this book. The book is written in a friendly, unassuming voice, and is easy to navigate. I’m having fun with it, and would recommend it to anyone curious about using playing cards for divination/spell work.

A very interesting book with lots of different information about playing cards. A lot of information in a small book, definitely worth the money. Definitely like this book. I don’t know if I’ll do any of the spells in the book but there’s definitely some divination and spreads that sounds interesting to try.

I could be mistaken but the author isn’t black… not happy about that if it’s true. I didn’t quite connect with the book and felt like it was just an info dump. It could be useful but I gave it away and use other sources online. Then I found out the author is a Jewish rabbi. Not too happy about that because of the cultural components. Amongst other things….

A really good read. I bought it less for the spell work and more for the historical information and card reading instruction. And I wasn't disappointed. There's plenty of useful information provided in an enjoyably readable style. If your focus is the playing card magic, you won't be disappointed either. There are 45 pages of spells of various types, some sorted by suit and others by area of concern (work, love, etc.). Even if hoodoo isn't your "flavour" of magick, the examples can be used to inform your methods.

Excellent tips and content about Magic with Playing Cards. It goes straight to the point and is very practical. I'm just not giving it 5 stars because I missed images (the author's Instagram has some great ones!) to illustrate spells with cards in practice.
