YOLO Juliet (OMG Shakespeare)

I am here to say that this series is one of the most clever things I have ever read. Shakespeare is still the hero of pretentious snobs who misunderstand him, as evidenced by bad reviews of this book.This isn't made to bring Shakespeare to the modern audience, it's simply a comical re-imagining. Because of language barriers with the original texts, we are unable to see how absurd some of William's plays were supposed to be. For example, people still think that Romeo and Juliet was intended to be the greatest love story of all time, whereas it was actually poking fun at the popular plays during Shakespeare's years.I promise you, open your heart to this book and you may see Romeo and Juliet as it was originally intended.

I've studied Romeo and Juliet for school - both high school and in university classes. I got this because I thought it would be entertaining, and it was! However, until I read it, I'd never really gotten quite how unrefined the Nurse's speech patterns are supposed to be. I did not expect to learn anything from this, so that was a pleasant surprise.If you're looking for an in-depth, thought-provoking retelling, this isn't the book. However, I would recommend it either for anyone who enjoys getting a good Shakespeare-inspired laugh, OR for someone who has never read the play before, but is about to. Shakespeare can be dense and confusing, even for people who devote their lives to studying it; in 9th grade English class it can be dang near incomprehensible. What this book does, and does well, is give a basic synopsis of what's going on in each scene and act in an entertaining manner that's quick to take in and easy to retain. And once you have that, it's a lot easier to make sense of the original play.

Bought this to read with friends as if it were the play for a joke. Probably the most fun we've had in a while. But as anything other than a joke I can't possibly see anyone being able to read it seriously.

My freshman students have been reading Romeo and Juliet and today I shared this book with them. They were ecstatic! We laughed as they took turns reading the parts and they loved that it is in their own language! Absolutely the best buy for this unit!

As someone who has been teaching R & J to ninth graders for over 12 years, I am thrilled to have this funny and fun book as a supplemental resource. Anything that makes Shakespeare more accessible is a welcome addition to teaching! Great job and I will certainly be buying the other titles!

I hadn't had YOLO Juliet on my desk for more than 10 minutes when my students noticed it and started to sign up for the waiting list to read it and Srsly Hamlet. The waiting list is about 20 students long at this point, and with my allowing them each 1 week with the book it's going to be spring before everyone's had a turn. We're all looking forward to more in this series.

My young granddaughter bought the 'Hamlet' book for herself and wanted this so badly, but could not afford it at the time...I gave it to her for her birthday and just to see her eyes when she opened her surprise filled my heart!!! Of course the money that she also found inside the book refilled her cash flow...

Bought for my son when he was about 11 - (he requested) helped him start to understand the story in the play ready for studying play at secondary school. Pleased to find something he wanted to read!

Excellent for lower-level learners.

Dou aulas para adolescentes e esse ano decidi que era a hora de dar aos meus alunos a chance de conhecer Shakespeare. Escolhi Romeu & Julieta por motivos óbvios. YOLO Juliet captou a atenção dos alunos para a obra e para a maneira que é usado o inglês em mensagens - com todas as suas abreviações e improvisações. A partir daí, iniciamos a leitura de uma obra facilitada. O próximo passo é assistir o filme e só então trabalhar as cenas favoritas no original. Ainda estou no meio do processo mas até onde posso avaliar está tudo correndo melhor do que eu esperava.

This is such a great gift, I'm so happy I found out about this book. I read it before wrapping it for a friend and I was almost sad to give it away; it's way too funny! And my friend just loved it too!
