Actually quite a good quality headset
This headset is for frames requiring ZS44 upper and ZS56 lower headset sizes (zero stack) and fits both a tapered (28.6/40) and straight (28.6/30) steerer forks. The cups are machined from alloy, the bearings are good - no play or problems out of the box - and the components all fitted together well with no play between bearing and cup or crown race. The reducer ring (anodized red) for straight steerer forks worked nicely - put it on the fork then the 1.5"/40mm crown race pushes onto it. As ever, the bearings in this headset will last about 15 minutes and creak a lot without grease between each of the components and all around the bearings. USE PLENTY OF GREASE!I have no idea why there are negative reviews other than people who are getting things badly wrong or because of poor frame tolerances. The Cube I fitted this headset to definitely had a slightly oval headtube so that the bearing was overly tight in the cup after fitting it into the frame. Check that your frame is definitely ZS56 and not ZS55 (some Meridas have this "standard"). Amazon sell cheap digital vernier calipers (£3) that are really useful for headset and other bearing measurement. You also can't assume that this headset is the same stack height as your old one. If the top of the fork is less than 2mm away from the top of your stem or top spacer, add another spacer or the top cap will bottom out on the fork top and not clamp the split ring into the top bearing, leading to play.
