I have been waiting for a book like this to come out in a long time
FINALLY!FINALLY!FINALLY! I have been waiting for a book like this to come out in a long time! The colonial mentality is the single most pressing issue facing Filipinos around the world. It is a shame that the Colonial media in the Philippines doesn't talk about this issue. From all the skin whitening products and the ignorance of Indigenous culture , E.J.R. David tells in his work why this is so. He shows the psychological underpinnings in what was came to be known as the "Colonial Mentality". He gives you the history of this phenomenon and gives solutions that would help Filipinos get out of the colonial mentality. The first step in solving a problem is recognizing that there is a problem. One of the biggest revelations I found in this book is how many Filipinos suffer from depression. Filipinos in America have a shockingly high rate of suicide among all other Asian groups. I think this is related to a lack of a firm identity. Many Filipinos don't know who they are. They're confused. They don't know they were descendants of great sea farers who navigated the world before the Europeans did.In this book you will come across the word "Kapwa" which means essence of being. You will also know about the concept of "Utang na Loob" which is the concept of giving back to your brethren. I think part of the colonial mentality is a lack of understanding the concept of "Utang na Loob". So many Filipinos are too materialistic these days that they are too concerned with getting ahead of their own people instead of helping their people. I hope you share this with your friends and family. Mabuhay ang lahi! Mabuhay ang Kayumanggi! Salamat!!!

Well written; good typography for easy reading. Helped me gain perspective on Filipino and Filipino American identity. This book also discusses Filipino mental health and CBT (cognitive behavioral therapy).

Interesting!
This book addressed the historical aspect of colonial history, and how it "may" have contributed to present day psychological consequences. My concern is that the author did not consider that the educational level of immigrants has changed significantly from the 1920s to the present. Those who came in the 1920s and 1930s were never able to travel back and forth to the Philippines. This is not the case for more recent immigrants who are economically better situated than previous immigrants.I would have liked to have seen a chapter that addressed the fact that professional obligations, of more recent immigrants, may be a contributory factor in maintaining their connection to their culture. This is especially a consideration for those in the medical field. Also, I am concerned that the author related that there is a tendency to hyphenate one's ancestry; thus, indicating shame of their indigenous ancestry. This cultural practice of hyphenating one's ancestry occurs not only in the Philippines, but also in the United States as well as Latin America where there has been also a history of colonization as well as immigration from Europe. I liked the book, and it made me think; however, I feel the book addressed issues that are more appropriately suited for students studying sociology and psychology.

Every American should read this history of what really happened in the Philippines as result of U.S.
This book helped me understand the oppression of the Filipino people by the Spanish and U.S. colonial occupations and their effect on the psychological well-being of Filipinos through inferiorizing Filipino culture.
