A Shimmer of Something: Lean Stories of Spiritual Substance Paperback – February 24, 2014

I am a fan of Bryan Doyle;'s writing. He is amazing and I buy anything I can of his. He died at the age of 60 so there won't be any more. So sad. Yes, I love this book.

Perhaps we could have a Sunday service in which someone stands, not in the pulpit but among the rest of us in the pews, and reads one of these shimmering stories, "inky guys and gals" as Doyle once put it. Maybe the windows of the sanctuary could be open. To the back beat of nature, we could let Doyle's penetrating insight and gorgeous lyricism wash over us, challenge us, comfort us, inspire us. And with grace of the great Giver, we might even become a little more whole and holy. Then, we could go out into the world and try to pay attention, like Doyle, that we might likewise see the shimmer all around us.

This collection of "proetry" by Doyle is something special. His artful "painting" with words stands on its own but, when paired with the spiritual essence of the content, this is is a masterpiece. Pieces and excepts and most of all visual images will come back to you over and over and, at unexpected times.The author's recent death means we will not have any new works by Doyle but, what he has left us with is truly "something."

This is one of the most beautiful books of poetry I have read in recent years. It is funny. It is story filled. It is a masterpiece of metaphorand inside into a soul and others' soul. I read it, and now will reread it.

I LOVE the way Brian Doyle uses language. While this is not my favorite of his writings (I prefer his non-fiction) this is definitely worth a read.

I recently discovered Brian Doyle's writing and have so enjoyed the diversity of his subjects. But each book, as is this one, is a gift of knowledge and wisdom of every single bit of life surrounding us.

Awesome book! Lo ed every page....every "proem"...no that is not misspelled. It is what the author calls his writing.They are like short story poems an they are wonderful.Highly recommend this book to all!

This is an extraordinary collection of poetic vignettes! They are so well-drawn and rich that, like great jokes, you need to read but a few at a time to absorb them.
