The pen and nibs are used such that you dip the nib in ink to write. Old school. **Q: what pen do you use these with?** A: This is a pen that you use for calligraphy. The nibs attach to the pen. All you need is ink and paper **Q: are these good beginner nibs?** A: Starter nibs set. They are quality that professionals will use. They have different levels of flex and pointed tip that is for copperplate type of inking. Beginners often start with manuscript pens. They are nibs of various widths and no flex. That is a different writing style. If you want to learn with a flexible pen, That's a good starter set. **Q: Can Sumi ink be used with this particular pen & nibs or does it have to be speed ball ink? Thx** A: I have used several quality inks and they seem to work fine. Not sure I have used Sumi ink. I always clean the nibs when i’m Done so they don’t dry up and clog. All stencils were wrapped individually in plastic bags and they even came of the carrying case. ### ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ My favorite, but NOT FOR BEGINNERS *by K***9 on January 13, 2020* First of all, I need to say that if you are a beginner, you WILL struggle with this set. You could use the oblique holder no problem, but the nibs are not meant for beginners. That being said, this is my absolute favorite set. the 101 nibs are my most used nib (also love the Leonardt EF), and I can't get enough of them. That being said, the first time I ever tried them I really struggled (as do most beginners). If the nib is scratching the page and ink is splattering everywhere, that is not the nibs fault, but you just don't have the technique down well enough to be using these. I know some people prefer for expensive holders, but this oblique pen works just fine for me, and I saw the expensive holders for the nibs that don't fit in standard holders. For the nibs, I definitely use the 101 the most. It creates think downstrokes and very thin hairlines. The other nib (I believe its a 103) I don't use as often, but it certainly allows you to create tiny writing (I just don't have as much of a need for). As any experienced user will know, make sure to clean the nibs off well for oils. If you have not used nibs before, you will NEED to cleans the nibs off well before.
