Q: We have very fine silt at the bottom of the pond. Is the mesh fine enough to catch it?

Hello, no I would say not, we use ours at work so getting it in the ground is not an issue, if it’s really fine I would think it will simply go through it

You presumably fully loosened the large fitting to enable the two tubes to extend. You then need to pull the large fitting, which has a rujbber ring inside it, down to the etended tube and rethread it which then tightens the joint and stops the two halves closing. I had the same problem initially until I sussed it - Instructions with the peice of kit are, of course, non-existant ! Hope this helps.

Q: Do you need to pump the handle constantly to create the suction

It has a valve at the bottom. You can do a single draw of the handle and pull the dirty water out inside the unit or the can move the handle in and out to draw out the dirty water through the side arm.
