Q: I want to prep a highly-grained oak for painting. Some recommendations are to brush on to fill holes & handle detail. Can this be brushed on?

Yes ,you can use this product as a grain filler. Thin it with water, use a brush or puddy knife to apply. When dry sand, tack cloth - prime & paint or stain & seal. I use this stuff almost on a daily basis and it is awesome. Drys fast sands easy, never goes bad. If it freezes nuke it in microwave, if it drys out add water & stir it up. Mix it with oil or latex paint to fill nail holes or oil or latex stain. Hands down the best woodfiller I’ve ever used. I’m looking for 4lb containers on amazon, haven’t seen it yet but ran across this q&a. Anybody that says different is a da. Lol. This stuff makes me money.

Q: Can you use this to prep kitchen cabinets for painting with advanced paint?

Only if your cabinets are going to be painted. I wouldn't recommend using it if the cabinets are going to be stained or natural finish

Q: Can this be colored with water based stain?

Although not stated on the container, the product appears to be water based (when wet it dissolves in water). Although I don’t know why you would want to do so, but you should be ok. Try it on a scrap piece first. It may look different when dry
