Well worth reading.
I vaguely remembered reading this in middle school and it having an impact on me. I'm a grandmother now and was curious about what it was that made an impression, so I read it again and realized it was the writing itself as much as the story. I'm planning on revisiting a few more old assignments from that time.

Jack London at his finest
This is a semi-autobiographical story that is extremely well written. I didn't even know that this book existed until one day, while searching for "Jack London" I found it. Most of his novels and short stories are about life in the Far North, this story takes place in Oakland, Ca. It's the story of perseverance in the face of continual rejection, and finally success. But success is bittersweet in this case.

Martin Dean and Bruce Springsteen
Martin Dean is an excellent metaphor for the experiences of artists that aren't appreciated when they're struggling and learning their craft and then have sudden celebrity thrust upon them by mere fate or good fortune for the same work they produced when not famous or noticed. As Bruce Springsteen once said, 99% of artists make 1% of the money while 1% of the artists make 99% of the money. Quite the conundrum.

Nice new vintage edition w some errors
A beautiful edition. Soft paper. Easy to hold and read. Great original font and cover. I am finding several typos, however. And someone typeset "Keats" at the end of a line by dividing it in half: Ke / ats... on p 301. Sloppy. Esp for a novel about the craft of writing. Does show us a bit of the "hack," tho.

Type font is poor. Reminder: books are intended to be read
Seawolf edition as shown and sold is terrible. Misleading description. It is printed on demand. They used a type font that is not standard and difficult to read. Why book publishers, who are struggling now, don't update their formats when it would cost them very little or nothing. So disappointed. I feel sorry for lower sighted people. They mow have accommodations in buildings but publishers, unless they were required, have not kept up with the times.
