U.S. Military Working Dog Training Handbook

I have never written a review before but this book warrants a review because it is so much better than any other dog training/care book I have ever read( and as a certified dog trainer, I have read and studied dozens). This book has EVERYTHING any person needs to care for and train any dog but particularly a high drive dog like the Malinois. I feel like now I can throw ALL the other dog books away and just read this one!!! A superb, fantastic, well written book with clear step by step instructions on not only how to train but also detailed information about why the particular training works so well. This is book is absolutely required for any dog owner or trainer; it is absolutely necessary for any serious dog lover. How the military produced this kind of superb writing is incomprehensible; but they did and every dog lover should be very, very thankful.

I found this book interesting and very useful if you have a working dog. I implemented most everything and it was useful and my dog responded well. Be patient with your dog though things taught take time. Would recommend. I have a female Belgiun Mal/ German Sheppard mix, she responded really well.

Good read.

I really appreciated this book. I had a trainer tell me about it and I read it in a few days. The first aid part is good info to know for sure. But they go in depth about training methods that you can mix and match to fit your dog's learning style. Very helpful.

I have a Chessie...and I wish I had a training center like these dogs do...she would excel. She can jump 8 ft straight up...like a spring...no climbing just up she goes. She can chase deer just like them...hop, hop and fly and nip the buck in the rump...in the front. If she sees that she missed corraling some up...she does a pivot 6 ft in the air...a 180 degree and get the 3 that she missed. She runs like a thoroughbred race horse...front legs straight out...not bent and all power in her rear legs...I am amazed when I watch her do that ground eating stride...she is beautiful. I have tried some of these exercises...and I wish that the county would develop one for public...and charge a fee. One time the K-9 dogs had a training area here...and I used it with my Lab...but they have moved it to Ft. Worth...so I am told. Chesapeakes are working dogs...and she loves to work hard. Thank you.

For dogs only. My MWD wolf would not take Kindly to most of the brutal parts, wouldn't respond well and bite my face off if I tried. of course wolves are far smarter than domestic dogs. and most humans for that matter and can think on their feet. best to do affection training and stay with then 24/7, off leash, then you are a 5% higher alpha 'pack member' and he's your best mate. we have both taken bullets for each other, not because we had to, but thats how packs work and survive. Better company than a woman, cheaper too. good book for medical.

Being retired military and owning a Belgian Malinois this book provided some good insight. Not all of it will apply obviously, but its good to have regardless.

I thought I'd read this first to get the gist of what it takes to train a working dog. It is very informative and in depth on the subject. I am thoroughly enjoying the read and applying some of the lessons to train my rat terrier/lab mix to detect narcotics/ tracking. Heavy attention is given to theory in the beginning, but is well worth it.
