Frank Bridge was Britten's teacher for four years. The Variations on a Theme of Frank Bridge, is a true virtuoso work that boldly exploits the resources of the string orchestra and was the first work to establish Britten's international reputation. The Sinfonia da Requiem was commissioned by the Japanese government in honor of the 2,600th anniversary of the imperial family. The work was rejected, probably because of its grim tone. This is a triptych, played without break and the movements' characters and titles recall sections of the Requiem Mass: "Lacrymosa," "Dies irae," "Requiem aeternam." Four Sea Interludes, extracted from the opera Peter Grimes, are dramatic orchestral depictions of the many moods of the sea. The Passacaglia, from Peter Grimes, is the operas most substantial interlude, a psychological portrait of the lonely and isolated Grimes. His brooding character is implicit in the main theme, while his unsatisfied desire for human companionship is expressed in the lyric viola melody near the end, associated in the opera with Grimes's drowned boy apprentice.
