Why am I getting nvme link speed n/a?

The most likely reason is that your processor does not suppose PCI-Express (or NVMe) on the M.2 Socket. For example, many of the newest generation of AMD processor mainboards--the AM4 socket--come with the port for PCI-Express, but can also support a SATA class M.2 drive. However, only Ryzen class processors can support the NVMe protocol on the M.2 socket. Any other processor that is supported by the mainboard will detect the drive, but only operate it at SATA speeds rather than PCI-Express speeds. Check your mainboard and processor support to make sure that you can actually support NVMe. You can always use Crystal Disk Mark to test the speed of your drive. Mine is operating at about 1850 MB/s, which is only possible if it connects via PCI-Express. If you run a speed test and see numbers in this range, then regardless of what you are seeing, your drive is operating at the proper speed and there is nothing that you need to do. Hope this helps!

You don't want to put a heat sink on a nvme drive as they perform and last longer when warmer then cooler.

Yes you can use an NVMe in a 2014-2015 MacBook Pros. You will have to get an adapter, but it will work, and the MBP will see it under NVMExpress. As with the Apple drive will not show under NVMExpress in System Information, only under SATA. I have one in mine. Get the drive, the adapter and do a fresh install and enjoy.
