Coventry Magic with Candles, Oils, and Herbs

The Rachael Ray of Modern Witchcraft
Back in the day--I think it was the late '80s, but I won't admit it--I discovered alternate spirituality. Wicca was the first flavor of alternate spirituality I tasted, and I have to say that the elemental magic I discovered there opened my eyes to the power of magic. - Introduction to Coventry MagicStudying magic is simple! Despite what you may have heard, the system is really not that complex. After many years of publishers actually embracing one of the oldest of the arcane sciences, there are literally hundreds of books that will teach you the essentials of how to build a spell - such as learning the nature of herbs, colors, timing, utensils, oils, and tinctures. The modern age (and the power of the internet) has made it possible for EVERYONE to have the information that has eluded many for centuries.Despite its accessibility, there is one thing that is missing in most of the books that tackle magical subjects - and that is how to get a spell to ACTUALLY work. In many cases, there is a common belief that magic is like an episode of Bewitched and that all one needs to do is twitch their nose or state a poem in iambic pentameter and ones desires and wishes are granted.Since I am a co-creator of a magical candle line, I am asked many questions about magic and spell crafting. One of the most frequent questions is, "I tried out this spell on this website, and it did not work. Why?" There are many answers to this frequently asked question. However, what I have come to find out is that (in most cases) the "transformational" intention of the spell is either wrongly used or the spell itself is the wrong spell for the "situation". Believe me; this can lead to hours and hours of frustration. The good news is that THIS ALL CHANGED with "Coventry Magic". Jacki Smith spends page after page resolving your "potential spell mishaps" before you even get to them. You learn how to create a spell, how to put the components together, and more importantly how to create your intentions to make the spell actually work. All of this is wrapped up in a humorous and fun approach to magic that takes it out of its Halloween garb of the past, and redresses it as a hip, practical, and fun way that not only allows you to cast a spell, yet teaches you some of the most powerful secrets of the universe. From the front cover to the back cover Jacki takes you on a magical journey, which has been crafted from her own experiences of 20+ years of being a magical practitioner. Some of the topics that she masterfully covers are:When to use magicAccessing your inner witchHexingTransformational magicUnderstanding your sphere of influenceElemental magicUsing Tarot with Magic - (a personal favorite)Building a spell from the ground upMaking your magic workA complete of Appendix covering topics such as stones, colors, tarot, magical days of the week, and much much more.I am thoroughly captivated by this book. "Coventry Magic" has replaced many of the dusty witchcraft books of days long gone with a completely modern take on the craft. If there is only one book that you buy this year on witchcraft - this would be the one.Storm Cestavani - Host of Psychic Friends Live

Destined to be a classic
When I started down this path nearly thirty years ago, the books available were very few and the magic in them was very formal. It was a bit intimidating. Ms. Smith makes magic accessible. There is a place for formality, high magic and elaborate rituals but you can't do that everyday. Coventry Magic is all about the everyday. It is also much more. It's about the solutions not parlor tricks. It's about personal transformation, personal responsibility and how and why it effects the magic you do.Beginning with magical theory and one of the best explanations I've come across for the mechanics of magic, Ms. Smith takes you through all the mental exercises you need to get clear about what you want to do and why. Her approach is very real and her tone is conversational but don't let that fool you. This is not some 'light and love', fluff-bunny, new age claptrap. The title of Chapter 4 is "Here is Where I Piss You Off". You know she means business. Of course she does; this is her business. Jacki Smith is the creator of Coventry Candles and has been manufacturing magical candles for twenty years. She has made upwards of two million magical candles for customers who keep coming back. They come back because her candles work. This makes Jacki Smith the lady to go to for candle magic advice and instruction. The book is broken down into four parts. Part One is Magical Theory where she explains why magic always works and how to get clear about what magic you actually want to perform. By the end of Part One you know why you are doing what you're doing and you have your focus. Part Two is Candle Magic and she covers everything you could want to know about candle magic and a few things it never occurred to you to ask. Part Three is Magical Practice which goes beyond the candle into other types of magic, use of energy and actual spellcrafting. Part Four contains all the appendices where you will find color correspondences, meanings for days of the week, months of the year, moon phases, numbers, crystals and which herbs to use and how to use them and a few other goodies.I very much wish a book like this had been available when I first started out. It would have been much friendlier to have "Aunt Jacki" along showing me the ropes. I am thrilled to have found this book now. It's a keeper. Ms. Smith will share reference shelf space with Cunningham and I'm sure I'll be thumbing through Coventry Magic on a routine basis.

F***ing brilliant!!
I ordered the Kindle version of this book as soon as it became available. Once I started reading it I had to keep putting it down. Every few pages there was another idea or tip that inspired me to play with candles, create a magical oil or just check my supplies to be sure I have what I need to work some major magic.Jacki's style is approachable, friendly and clear. She doesn't cloak things in some type of mystical "mumbo-jumbo" language. Her personality and sense of humor as well as her practical matter-of-fact approach to this topic shine through each page.In the interest of full disclosure, I know Jacki Smith. I've been lucky enough to take a workshop with her as well as get to spend some time perusing her wares and picking her brain. She knows her stuff and it shows in this book. When I learned that it was being published I impatiently cooled my heels until it was finally released. It was worth the wait. It's a wonderful book for beginners to the topic and is accessible to followings of any or no spiritual paths. You could be Christian, Jewish Pagan,Buddhist or a follower of Voodoo or Santeria and you will find these techniques useful, interseting and beat of all they work!If you have any interest in this topic, I highly recommend you get this book!
