The Spanish Main

Well worth adding this movie to your collection.
From 1945 we get such an entertaining and fun old time swashbuckling tale where every swash is well and truly buckled. Paul Henreid is the Captain of a Belgian vessel with people going to the new world to colonize the Carolinas until a storm blows them off course to the Spanish main, those diabolical people put them into slavery and prisons until he escapes and lives the life of a pirate, The Barracuda, in his travels he meets and falls for Maureen O'Hara who is to be the governor's wife and he is the guy who imprisoned him, even sweeter vengeance played by Walter Slezak. Such a wonderful movie and if you don't find yourself smiling through the whole thing, you must have lockjaw. Lots of big ships doing battle, lots of swordplay and lot of other good stuff.

A GOOD CLASSIC MOVIE WITH TOP HOLLYWOOD STARS, A SWASHBUCKLER MOVIE THAT HAS A GOOD STORY.
WHILE I WOULDNT CALL IT AN ACADEMY AWARD WINNER OF A MOVIE, IT STILL HAS THE TOP HOLLYWOOD CELEBRITIES IN IT AND THE STORY WAS JUST AS GOOD AS THE ACTORS.THE MOVIE IS WORTH THE MONEY FOR ANY CLASSIC MOVIE COLLECTOR

A true pirate classic
Okay, first off, like nearly every pirate film of this era they play fast and loose with the whos and whens, but that was never the point, they were swashbucklers and riotous adventures. This is one of the gems of the genre. If you want a challenge try to identify the extras who were in Casablanca or Some Like it Hot or any of a number of other studio system movies. All that said, this is a great Saturday afternoon popcorn movie. If you like flashing swords and cheesy dialogue/plots you will not be dissapointed.

Swashbuckling fun!
This movie is just plain fun--and Paul Henreid is eye-candy for the ladies, with his blonde curls and hairy chest. Great cast, fun story, just great entertainment for the family.

A trip down memory lane....
My girlfriend and I watched this EVERY DAY when it was on Million Dollar Movie (for those of you who remember, they showed the same movie every day for a week.) I couldn't wait to see it again! In COLOR! (Neither of us had color sets then either.) Well....it wasn't the same. Gosh, it was only 50+ years ago..but very tame. It is standard fare; the villain very evil, and a fun romp. Don't expect anything deep or surprising. Hero defeats the bad guys and gets the girl. (I wouldn't watch it every day for a week now... (sigh)

One of the all time best classic pirate movies.
This is one of my all time favorite classic pirate movies, right up there with "Captain Blood" and "The Black Swan".Now I don't have to wait for some channel to have it when the mood hits. ๐๐๐

Swashbucklers
The story line was created by Paul Henreid to be written by somebody else, and then he produced it and starred in it. It's lots of fun, once you get used to the idea that Paul Henreid, the suave intellectual and lover, can swashbuckle with the rest of them. The movie moves right along with swordplay, pistol duels, men thrown overboard, and general derring-do by all hands; costumes are elegant, humor is broad, ladies are spirited, and it certainly looks as if everybody enjoyed themselves. This fresh re-issue from Warner Brothers is brightened up and has its opening credits. Now that it's re-issued as it deserves, you'll enjoy it as much as I did.

Paul Henreid is worth watching in every movie
I was looking for a Paul Henreid film that wasn't like any of the others. This Pirate film fit the bill. The story isn't original: Honest man driven to do bad things by a powerful Governor. However it is happily what I expected, A Swashbuckling Good Time! Paul Henreid and Maureen O'Hara made a good pair. Their acting ability & others helped elevate the plot. Also seeing all the costumes in color was a nice treat, since so many Pirate movies are in black & white.

Maureen in Glorious Technicolour! ODEON RELEASE
It is good to be able to really praise ODEON who have, here, released a wonderful Glorious Technicolour print of a very good old fashioned, but still highly watchable, Pirate Swashbuckler. O'Hara (who got top billing on the film if not the DVD box) is just amazing anyway, but in this colour, boy does it take you back to those wonderful days of cinemagoing in the 50' and 60's (Yes I know the film was made in 1945, but that was the year I was born!). The action is very well filmed tho doubles are fairly obvious in long shots, (and to me a very strange one where that well known Stuntman and fighter Fred Graham doubles for Mike Mazurki of all people). Walter Slezak excels and has some juicy funny lines. Barton MacLane and John Emery are good in villain roles and Binnie Barnes makes the best Anne Bonney. A real dash of good old tehnicolour nostalgia. I loved it.

LIke very much
I had this movie in video, so when I saw it in Dvd, I was delighted to be abre to buy it, although it doesn't have subtitles for my other families member who aren't fluent in English...I just love the sword's fighting, very traditional in some movies...Also good with a couple of history details... there are movies with no respect on that regard or just don't have a previous investigation on the era... on that score this one mentions correct data...most of the times as far as I could see

Finally!
I love old swashbucklers and have been looking for this one (in region 2) for quite some time. Finally it is here! The movie concerns a Dutchman who along with all of his fellow crew are wrecked near a Spanish harbor. The local mayor makes them his prisoners. The Dutchman escapes to become the feared pirate the Barracuda. Sadly there are no extras or surround sound for those who consider that important, however the picture is good and in glorious technicolor.
