Easy install & integration, works great, many improvements over residential grade hardware
The "CONTROL" series of locks are NOT a residential grade lock. They don't have WiFi, ZWave, or Zigbee integration. These are not your average consumer residential grade locks. That said, if you understand what the purpose of this lock is, it is fantastically easy to install and integrate. Another user left a review that says the lock is junk because it requires additional hardware to use. Well, that user just had the wrong expectation of what the lock is for.So... What is this lock for? And what happens if I want to use it for some other purpose? This lock, and the whole "CONTROL" series of locks, are intended for multi-tenant buildings. Say an apartment complex. They are literally pick and bump proof because they just don't have traditional cylinders, and the knob is physically disconnected from the lock bolt in the secure state. The beauty of these locks is their rapid deployment and integration. Lost keys, lockouts, changing tenants, all of these kinds of problems are history. In a large multi-tenant facility, there is a remote gateway, the Allegion GWE, that allows for remote access. Also, with the right programming device, you can actually program a brand new key fob at a central office with a command that tells the lock to add the key fob to the lock database, or even remove other fobs I think, so if you have to replace a lost fob, you can simply give the tenant a new one, which will automatically program the lock to accept the new one and delete the old one. Sure, THIS requires additional hardware. Now, how can I use this in my residential house? What do i need to make this work in my home? 2 things. You need the lock, and you need a "key" (fob). Yes they are sold seperately, so strictly technically, yes I suppose you need to buy something else. But is that actually "additional hardware"? Not really, it's a key. All locks have keys. This one just happens to be sold seperately.Installation is a breeze. Simply install like any other deadbolt. Nothing special. Once the lock is installed, you then need to program it. These locks do not come with a key pre-programmed. That's because they're designed to be integrated into an existing Allegion Engage universe. But starting up a new Engage system and adding the locks is very easy. The fastest way is to download the ALLEGION ENGAGE APP on your mobile device. Create an account, and log into it. Then click on DEVICES and follow the wizard. The lock will be added. This takes all of about 1 minute. Then add your users by name, and for each user, you link a "credential" (key). I won't get into the details of how to add users and credentials here, as there are numerous YouTube videos available on these topics, as well as advanced management of the lock system.Suffice it to say that from the time you open the package, to installing, programming, and testing out the install, you're looking at less than a half hour... or about 10 minutes if you are a tech junkie like me. Even the total novice can have the lock up and running in less than an hour. Now, residential management is ever so slightly more difficult than a big multi-tenant facility, but that is only because you won't have the GWE gateway for remote access. Instead, you will need to link your cell phone to the lock in the mobile app when you want to do any programming. But that is a breeze, it works perfectly every time, and it only takes about 5 seconds to link your mobile to the lock to enter programming. Some of the nicer hardware elements of a commercial lock is that they are built stronger for more "abuse", and in this case, the bolt has a tapered face, which is great if your door doesn't close perfectly, as when you turn the knob, the taper pulls the bolt into the slot, so no more hard stops, pulling ot pushing the door while turning the handle, etc. This lock also includes an emergency battery fail backup. If the batteries die, you can jump start the lock with a 9v battery from the outside, so you are never actually locked out. Simply touch the battery to the contact points on the bottom of the exterior face, wait for the beep, and then scan your feyfob or card.Now... WHat are "Credentials"? This is your "key". You can get either a credit card shaped key, or you can get a little plastic keychain keyfob. These locks are commercial grade, they require the right credentials. You probably won't find these for really cheap. Most vendors sell the correct MIFARE CLASSIC 1K cards and fobs for around $6-10 each, or cheaper in multi-packs. don't waste your time buying super cheap ones JUST because they say "MIFARE CLASSIC". The reason is that all of the cheap ones are READ ONLY, which is NOT compatible with these locks. These use encryption and 2-way communication with the keyfob, so you do have to buy the correct ones. But again, commercial grade with encryption, designed to be very durable and reliable, and secure.So... all in all, these are excellent locks with many nice features. Just keep in mind, these are commercial grade and were not designed to be used in a single-family home. Yes, you can use them in your home very easily, if you understand how to use the management app. If you set your expectations right, then these locks are great!
