Review: This has meant so much to me - Some time ago my husband sent me the video for “waving through a window” with singing and to my surprise I loved it, listened to it so many times, learned every word. Sang it loud. I have aspergers and related so much to the message of being shy and insecure. He got me the soundtrack for my birthday and it’s in my car now, either repeating “waving through a window” or the whole album over and over. Finally one day it was time to read the play and make more sense of the story. I read it all today, I didn’t have anything to do today and it’s not super long. At one point listened to “for forever” a bunch of times once I got to that point, it’s much more beautiful in context. This seems like a stage script in some ways with singing in different parts and things like “oh” on one side are said a lot. I definitely did the right thing knowing the soundtrack so well before reading. A beautiful story and soundtrack. Missed my chance to see the original Evan playing, he is done with his role soon and now it is all sold out. Should have gotten the 200 dollar tickets on the very left when I had the chance, but will have to settle for his replacement on stage someday when we go see it. Has been a wonderful experience, this music and script, beautiful story, bravo. Review: Wonderfully, Brilliant Story - I don't really know how to review this. First off, I love the cast album. It's close to being a problem at this point because I've barely listened to anything else since the cast album came out in February. This isn't a musical that's sung all the way through, so there are speaking parts that get lost between the songs, and aren't on the cast album. So, when I heard there was a script book coming out for this, I one-clicked this because I had to have it. Even with the cast album, I cried. A lot. An embarrassing amount that I shouldn't admit, probably. But this book gives even greater depth and context to the Dear Evan Hansen story. ***Spoilers below*** So, who is Evan Hansen? Evan Hansen is a senior in high school and when we first meet him, he has a broken arm. We first meet him in this story as he writes a letter to himself as part of an assignment to his psychologist. Hence, the "Dear Evan Hansen" title. The letters play a major role in this musical. Evan is insecure and his only friend, or the only person that interacts with him at all, is his cousin, Jared. His mother works long hours at the hospital as a nurse's aide and takes night classes to be a paralegal. His life takes a dramatic turn, for better or worse, when a kid at his school commits suicide and Evan gets swept up in a story that changes all their lives. This script is beautifully written. It's a nice book to have when you live miles away and can't see the show in person. The story is heart-breaking, poignant, and manages to end on an uplifting note. I would highly recommend getting this book and the cast album, so that we may all drown in our feels together.

Wonderfully, Brilliant Story

Good play.
For someone who cannot get to Broadway, this is a great way to call for Dear Evan Hansen. It's heartfelt and a way to remember everyone needs someone.

it was kind of hard to review this like normally but I found this to be amazing
Considering this is the script for the play, it was kind of hard to review this like normally but I found this to be amazing. The characters, plot, and songs were just so heartfelt. It was so fun reading along, and then being able to listen to the soundtrack as it went (I really wish all books were like this). There was only one problem with listening to the songs as you go, and that was that you had to pause some songs in the middle to read the dialogue, but did not change how I rated this book. All in all, if you are a broadway/musical fan, have seen the play, or just enjoy something that will make you smile, I would recommend picking up a copy of this!

Stunning, Beautiful, Touching and Funny! This Show Has EVERYTHING.
I saw "Dear Evan Hansen" on Broadway last week and the first thing I thought when it was over was: "I want to see it again!" Well, plane trips to NYC and ticket prices for this Tony nominated (9!) show preclude repeated viewings for me, so buying this book and reading the scrips while listening to the glorious soundtrack will have to do until it either comes my way on a road tour or is made into a movie. The only drawback to reading this book instead of seeing the musical is that you'll miss Ben Platt's STUNNING portrayal of Evan Hansen. I've never seen anything like it and he will surely win the Tony. I was utterly FLOORED by is performance and I don't know how he can do it 8 times a week! Can you tell I have ALL the love for this show?

Fills in the Gaps from the Soundtrack
Obviously if you are looking at this book, you have already checked out the soundtrack and are looking for a little more information to fill in the gaps between the songs. Look no further, this clears everything up. For someone like me (lives in Washington State) I will likely never be able to see a production of this play and rely almost completely on these types of books to know what actually happens in a play. Dear Evan Hansen has an amazing message that leaves everyone relating to at least one character at one point or another throughout the play. I honestly did not expect this play to be so good. You don't need to be a musical theater fan to enjoy this book.

Beautiful story, masterfully told
LOVED reading this. I was fortunate enough to see the Broadway production in 2016 and instantly fell in love with this show. Getting to read the script was absolutely wonderful. I was reminded of little moments in the music that are not capture in the cast recording - and reminded of how beautiful this performance is for all cast members. The story-telling is so authentic to today, and the themes of connection, loneliness, and communication are wonderfully woven throughout the book. The inside cover art is also a real treat!

As a drama student and teacher I am always being recommended new plays to read and see. Dear Evan Hansen is such a heartwarming and hilarious story of a senior highschool boy with severe social anxiety and the challenges he faces trying to overcome his condition. It is a story that everyone can relate to, from feeling alone to the hardships we all faced at school. Definitely worth reading and the songs that accompany the piece are truly amazing. Cannot wait to get the chance to go and see in on the stage.

The package arrived on time which was wonderful to come home to. The script is beautifully written and the songs are beautifully composed. I hope to see Dear Evan Hansen live one day but I'm afraid that may never happen. The book is a wonderful keepsake and a great read. I highly recommend it.

It’s a really good book and it’s more perfect because it’s my favorite musical. Everyone should read it and enjoy it like me.
