So fun
These are so fun and a great way to build community in bigger groups. I teach small group classes, so it wasn’t so great for that, but for staff meetings and bigger classes— I love it!

COVID-friendly grouping.
I teach English in high school. When we write essays we are using Google docs to exchange/share papers for peer editing. Up until I bought the grouping pencils, I was have to come up with some creative verbal cues for exchanging papers. The pencils are so much better. They offer three different ways to group for variety. Because they are plastic, I can easily sanitize them once I collect them from students. Also, the cup they come in makes it easy to dispense to students as well. My kids loved them because it was different and exciting way to see who they ended up getting as partner.

Engaging Teacher Tool!
I will use these terrific pencils the remainder of my years teaching. I had them in my cart forever here on Amazon and when some students gave me Amazon gift cards for an end-of-year gift, I finally clicked ADD to cart! :+)Just as others stated, you can group students by pencil color, the shape on the pencil or the number on the pencil. So kids can't try to pick a certain pencil to be with friends since you announce the group they should find, AFTER they pick their pencils. They are as pictured, but I will say that my initial thought upon opening the container was that they seemed less substantial because they are plastic. They are not flimsy--not at all, but yes, plastic. I think I actually had wood in mind when I ordered b/c after all, they are "pencils". Of course I made this up in my own mind b/c they are clearly described as plastic in the description. If I lost these- I would absolutely by them again!

Students loved them!
I love that there are 3 methods of sorting students out and it keeps them on their toes as to how I'll be grouping them this time!

Three grouping possibilities!
These are perfect for the lazy teachers! I didn’t have to make anything, and that is worth the cost to me. They have 6 different colors, each color had a number between 1 and 6 printed on it, and each color also has 6 different shapes! So, you can group by all the same color, then switch up the group to all the same number, and then switch it again by grouping all the same shape.

Just for grouping, not for calling on students, unless you modify them
I wanted something for student numbers also. It would have been very easy to simply put sequential numbers on them since there are shapes and colors to be used for grouping. That would have made this product multi-purpose and versatile for teachers. I solved the problem by simply writing numbers on the reverse side in a sharpie. Worked great. Love the fact that there is a canister. With my adaptation, they work great for me.

Must have for teachers and Instructional coaches!
I have been teaching for over 26 years and I absolutely love this product.. I have used these in 2nd grade, 6th grade and at a staff meeting with teachers. Everyone loves them because you can give the students a stick as they walk in and then tell them, "I need everyone to group up by..." There are many ways to group (by shape, color or number). It's very flexible!

Love them!
These are exactly what I was looking for. Some days, I don’t need to group my students in a specific way. I just need to break them into random, small groups. And it’s good for the kids to work with different people, too! This ensures that my students get to work with new people every time I use them. The kids can just pick a pencil and I randomly decide if I’m grouping them by color, shape, or number!I think next year I might write their names in sharpie to use the pencils like popsicle sticks/have a little more control within their three groups. Every once in a while, the groups didn’t work well as randomly selected. It would be nice to be able to counter that by saying “Now find your shape group and discuss” or something to that effect. Expo marker over the sharpie erases the writing (just tested), so I can use them year after year with different student names! But that limits the kids to three groups. So I’m thinking I’ll have three purposefully selected groups but still allow the students to pull a random pencil regardless of the name, when it suits the activity.

Useful and flexible tool for quickly grouping students
These pencils make grouping students quite easy for a variety of tasks. For a jigsaw, start everyone with the same colour in their expert groups and have them make groups with one of every colour for the next stage. For stations, have them draw a pencil and the number they draw is the station they start at. Because there are 3 ways to group, it also means that if 2 students who don't work well together draw the same colour/number/shape, you can switch to one of the other two options quite easily without anyone being the wiser.
