Perfect!
Just what I needed and easy enough to install. Now, I don't have worry about excess heat and the risk of fire on the bottom side of my wooden mantel. Yes, the metal will get hot but the airspace created with the spacers between the metal and the wood allows your mantel to stay cool. Works really well. A little pricey for what it is but ask yourself what your peace of mind is worth or possibly the cost of replacing your home due to a preventable fire. Very happy with this purchase!

Works!!
First one was delivered. Bent. Box and product were bent. Returned. Second one arrived just fine and it really really works. We placed it flat against the top of the mantle and everything above it, including items sitting directly on it are totally cool to the touch. I am impressed it works this well.

Expensive but does the job
Was hesitant to purchase given some of the reviews related to damage in shipping. I purchased two for our new home that we had major concern over how hot the mantel was getting. The boxes we received were well packed and unless the shipper does a major crush job on the box, shouldn't have any damage. Our mantles are narrower than these as designed so had to cut about 1" off the back to keep the bend in line with the mantle profile. If you cut down the size of the protector, you remove a crimp that is a part of the manufacturing process, thus allowing a bit of shape distortion. Since the manufacturer only offers one size, buyer beware that any modification potentially affects the structural design of the protector. We have a brick fascia so the slight distortion is not noticeable at all. I used this product in conjunction with an adhesive backed heat shield, in which together, perfectly reduces the heat from the fireplace.

This is a good product
Mine came well packaged. It was wrapped and taped with brown paper and placed inside the box shown in the picture. No scratches like others have mentioned, so maybe the manufacturer took notice and started packaging better. Its very easy to install and does exactly what its supposed to do. Our wood mantle is 25 inches above our wood burning insert. The mantle would get very hot to the touch, now its just a little warm. I feel much safer with this in place to protect the mantle.

Worked great for custom fireplace surround
Worked great and perfect size for our Ikea Besta cabinet fireplace surround. I had to drill holes in slightly different locations, but didn’t have to trim. I also had to purchase 3” long 1/4” bolts to attach to the cabinets above the fireplace. To ensure sufficient heat protection, I installed 1” thick ceramic heat resistant insulation in the gap created by the 1” ceramic spacers that came with the heat shield. I’ll be covering up the ugly outer edge of the insulation with 1” black aluminum U channel material I just ordered. This definitely works to keep the cabinets from getting too hot when the gas fire is on!

Does a Great Job!
Bought this to deflect the heat coming off my gas fireplace away from the mantel and the TV that's mounted above it. Easy to install and worked great! I took the suggestions here to drill two more holes in the middle to avoid sagging since the span is so long. Don't know why the company doesn't just do this already. Hopefully they pay attention to customer reviews. Definitely recommend if you have a TV mounted above your mantel.

It works but.....
We have a large insert, and burn a lot of wood during the cold Idaho winters, but recently decided to install a mantel. I mounted the mantel pursuant to local code, which is WAY above the insert, and it still got way too hot. I researched many options and this appeared to be the best bet. It seems to be doing the trick, both in keeping the mantel cool with the air space created with the porcelain spacers, and by deflecting the heat, but my issues were with packaging. It arrived in a long, cardboard box, no packing around it whatsoever, and one corner was bent. I carefully straightened it out but I have to wonder if the paint around it is not compromised and will soon peel. The other issue with packing was that not only did it come with no protection, allowing it to bounce around in the box, it was very scratched. I bought some heat-resistant fireplace paint and it looks fine now but I shouldn't have had to do that after spending $50 on a piece of sheet metal and 4 spacers. Just a cheap plastic bag around it for shipping would have kept it from getting scratched.
