Very nice "real" instrument.
I bought this for our six year old, who had shown an interest in learning to play an instrument. I have sung and played several instruments for many years, and while I didn't want to spend a lot (yet) I wanted something that was "realistic" and NOT interested in an electronic one that played songs for you. After about three weeks of ownership, I'm very satisfied with it. She has learned to play several songs, and finds it easy to play. The sound quality is decent, and it is not annoying to my ears, as some instruments/toys are.You play by pressing just one finger to get one note...then blow. Unlike a child's recorder that requires a certain amount of air to make the right sound, you can blow softly or rather hard, and get a similar sound. One limitation is that you cannot play "sharps" or "flats" -- just the notes in the key of C. Now, that can be pretty big, but ... I think that - for now - the trade off is reasonable. We will see if she is truly interested in playing an instrument, then graduate to something better in a year or more.I have been able to write out the words for several songs, and then write the number to show her which finger she presses for each word. A little time consuming, but worth it when i see the expression on her face after she plays "Silent Night" or "Mary had a Little Lamb." It would be nice if there were links to web sites with songs in the key of C.As some reviews have pointed out, it IS fully plastic, so I don't know how long it will last, and with a 2- and 3- year old in the house, it's days may not be long...have to prepare for that too. If one of the "springs" (also plastic) were to break, I don't know what the effect would be, and what, if anything could be done to fix it...maybe use super glue to put in a real spring??So in spite of the two "negative items" I've noted -- key of C and being plastic -- I still give it a five-star rating. And the price is not bad either.

All lung powered, requires no batteries has no lights. It's very simple and worth the price.
This was bought for my son as a birthday gift. He's 4 years old and has numerous musical interests. He wanted a "real sax" not a "baby one" so i winged it and bought this one hoping this would fill that wanting/need of his and it did. It's made from a strong plastic that feels good. It not strong enough to swing like a baseball bat though. So don't go crazy sax guy or it might break. From what I can tell the mouth piece doesn't come out.The upper stack notes face left and the lower stack notes face right. You can play the individual notes one at a time or play multiple to make other notes. It makes a kinda kazoo sound more so than a Saxophone. It's all lung powered, requires no batteries has no lights. It's very simple and worth the price.

too difficult to blow!
This little saxophone is cute, light and the notes are on key and accurate. But it is SO difficult to blow! I got it for my 18 month old and yes, it may have been a little too early for him. But when I try to blow on it it was not easy. I don't know if I got a 'stiff' one but man was it hard to play. It says 3 years and up but I can't imagine a young child playing with it. You have to blow hard into the mouth piece and press the keys. which are quite stiff. at the same time other wise no sound. And since it does not come with any kind of strap you have to basically play it on the floor holding the saxophone with your feetI don't see my son playing with it for a while. Definitely a toy for a older child with a sturdy lung capacity and a grip of steel!

Great educational toy
My daughter just turned 3 this july and has always been musically inclinded. You can always find her dancing, singing, or attempting to make noise out of anything in the house. I myself, am a saxophone player and thought, what the hay, lets give this a shot and see if she takes to it. She absolutely loves this, shes a bit young to learn the "do re me fa so la ti do" keys of the instrament but she enjoys making noises and dancing around with it. The mouthpeice was broken off when i had recieved it and i had to super glue it on, and i am also adding a strap to it so its easier to play while standing up and jamming out with her. You get what you pay for, but i will be back buying the other instraments available, theyre great for expanding a childs love for music.

VERY DISAPPOINTED!
Just received this from Amazon (12/5/11) for my 4 year old son. It was going to be a Christmas present for him. The toy arrived scratched, the mouthpiece was broken off and cracked (and at the bottom of the box) and the platic wrap on the front of the toy's box was ripped. The sax looks very cheap and the plastic material it's made out of is flimsy. I read all of the reviews prior to purchasing this and also did some comparison shopping before making the decision to buy the Bontempi sax. BIG MISTAKE - it's a piece of junk. Save your money or go with a different brand. Although the Amazon box it shipped in was wrapped appropriately and the inside was stuffed with the "sealed air" inflatable packing material - it arrived damaged. The seller was Direct Product Distributions. The quality of the toy is poor - cheaply made. Since it was damaged upon arrival, I really question the durability of the toy and how long it would've lasted otherwise. I've purchased many items from Amazon and have always been very satisfied - except this time. This is also the first time I've written a review but felt I had to comment on the poor quality of this toy. It's being returned.

REALLY awesome toy !!! you will LOVE it
I was not sure about buying this, but I would again and again and again. The only issue was the silver finish wore off to black in a few spots, BUT Thats because it was played with SO much. Hope my review was helpful! Get it - your kiddo will LOVE it.
