Review of Blu Ray double feature
This is an excellent deal, two of Eastwood's best westerns in a single package. Each movie gets its own disc and they are loaded with extras. Of special interest on the Josie Wales disc is a thorough "making of" feature with many of the original cast talking about their experiences. You know, as an aside, given that so many of Eastwood's westerns were made nearly 50 years ago, I have a hard time remembering which was which. In fact the only things I really recalled were that in one movie he painted an entire town red and in another he mowed down a bunch of bad guys with a Gatling gun. This is the movie with the Gatling gun. Anyway, among the extra features on the Unforgiven disc is a complete episode of the Maverick TV show from 1960 starring Jim Rockford -- wait, I mean James Garner -- and this skinny young actor who is out to gun Maverick down. Guess who the skinny actor is. Altogether a most satisfying purchase at a good price.

Eastwood's Best
Two of Clint Eastwood's best films are on one Blu Ray and the result is stunning. The Outlaw Josey Wales is now obtaining cult status and can stand with the best of the great westerns. Eastwood's renegade Confederate on a mission of revenge against the Northern Vigilantes who killed his family drives this movie as the hunted Josey Wales takes on other misfits searching for freedom and takes them to a classic finish. Unforgiven is his masterpiece. An aging retired killer takes on one last job from a town's "girls" to exact revenge for cowboys that cut one of them up badly. Eastwood contrasts the harsh law of an autocratic sheriff played by Gene Hackman in an Oscar winning performance with the stumbling attempt of a gunman far past his prime who finally enters the town and uses sheer unapologetic violence against dictatorial law. The Blu Ray versions of these two films are the best they've ever been for home viewing. An excellent two for one.

Classic Westerns Rejuvenated
Unforgiven is a great story of revenge, remorse and unrepentance. But with the acting of Gene Hackman, Richard Harris, Morgan Freeman, et al, the plot becomes believable: both humorous and terrible. Outlaw Josie Wales is the epic Spartacus standing up against the entire Roman Empire, but set in the post Civil War west and fought with the most beautiful revolvers ever made: the 1851 Colt Navy Conversion. Sandra Locke's insipid acting is nicely countered to Chief Dan George's humor. Would have been better without the tobacco juice.

Putting The Outlaw Josey Wales & The Unforgiven together in one package must have been the idea of some Western aficionado who likely wondered if anyone would get the irony. OK, I think I did, but you be the judge. The Outlaw Josey Wales concerns, you guessed it, an outlaw named Josey Wales, played, of course, by Eastwood, who also directs. Eastwood's Wales is a driven man. He witnesses his family's massacre during the guerrilla war that was fought between Kansas & Missouri prior to the outbreak of the Civil War. Wales loses his wife & son to guerrillas who support the Union, so he joins a band of Confederate guerrillas, the same kind of black flag flying Bushwackers who counted Jesse & Frank James, The Younger Brothers, & a host of other fighters who would go on to become outlaw legends, in their ranks. The war between the Northern Bushwackers & their Southern counterparts was marked by bloodshed & then more bloodshed, usually visited on hapless civilians who had the misfortune to be in the wrong place as the Bushwackers rode by. For Eastwood's Wales, Lee's surrender at Appomattox might mean the Army of Northern Virginia is retiring from the field, but he isn't. After gunning down a contingent of Union troops who shot his comrades in cold blood after they'd surrendered, Wales lights out for Texas. He is now, it seems, the most wanted outlaw in America & he's being hunted by the very Northern guerrillas who killed his family. Played by Eastwood, Wales is almost a Southern knight without the armour. Whatever he does & whomever he kills is justified because his family & then his comrades were all killed in cold blood. Wales displays the only moral code in the film, one that allows him to kill Federals & other assorted scum, while still rescuing a family of settlers from Kansas, the very state he originally went to war with. At very much the other end of the spectrum vis a vis the telling of Western yarns, is The Unforgiven, a movie I think Eastwood should have won an Oscar for &, in my opinion, is his best film, excepting only Cry Macho. In The Unforgiven, Eastwood plays an aging gunfighter/killer who is lured back to his days as a hired gun 'cause he needs the money to keep his farm afloat & his children fed. He & a couple of other guns, one played by Morgan Freeman who delivers another stellar performance, are hired by a group of prostitutes to kill the cowboy who slashed the face of one of them. Any redeeming qualities any of the characters might have have had have been checked at the door by Eastwood, who also directs. He & his companions are only marginally more palatable than the town sheriff & his deputies Eastwood & company have to overcome to fulfil their mission. That sheriff is played by Gene Hackman, as cold & pathological as Eastwood only he wears a badge. Pay particular attention the results of Hackman's attempts to repair his house's roof, as well as the interplay between his character & English Bob, a gunfighter hailing from the British Isles & brilliantly underplayed by Richard Harris. This is a movie of nuances, much more so than in any other Eastwood movie. Here, the averted gaze, the tough gunfighter who is practically blind without spectacles, Eastwood's partners who lose all the money the ladies of the night paid them by having sex with those same ladies, the reporter who wants to glamourize killers with six shooters, it all contributes to the story Eastwood is telling & it's as tory that has no myths & no glamour, only people killing other people because they can. So, basically, in The Outlaw Josey Wales, Eastwood imbues his character with a certain nobility & a justification for the violence that follows him wherever he goes. In The Unforgiven, Eastwood effectively deconstructs the Western myth that films like The Outlaw Josey Wales helped to both revitalize & propagate. They are both excellent examples of their genres, but if you're looking for the laconic demeanour, slow talking, quick drawing gunman Eastwood played from his spaghetti Western days to the Pale Rider, be warned you won't find that character in The Unforgiven.
