A hefty tome!
I bought this book because I saw the exhibit at the Corcoran Museum of Art in Washington, D.C. I could have bought the book at the museum's gift shop, but probably would have paid more. Most importantly, though, I bought this book because I wanted to "take home" the images I saw in the exhibit - I didn't want to just have memories of the exhibit. So far, even though I've had the book for about two months now, I've barely had the time to crack it open and look through. But since the exhibit was enlargements of the photos in the book (with good backstory descriptions), I know I won't be disappointed when I do look through the book.

Monumental
This is a monumental book which covers all aspects of war photography, from it's beginnings to the present. It also covers much more than the actual armed conflict- topics such as recovery from injury, how families are affected, propaganda, etc. are covered. I saw the exhibition at The Corcoran Gallery in D.C- it was massive and powerful. This is a large, very heavy book (beautifully printed) and as is typical Amazon threw it in a box with a couple" pillows" in it. Fortunately it arrived in perfect shape, but check it when it comes for corners, etc. The potential for damage was high.

Powerful - there is nothing else like it
Ten years of research went into the show and this book. It tells the story of war in an objective a way as possible and it is done by subject matter not by a timeline. For both lovers of photography and those interested in the subject of war. There really is nothing else like it. And it really has something for everyone. It covers every emotion from humor to sadness. It is tough in parts but is is worth the effort. I believe that in time this will go down in history as one of the truly great photography books.

Powerful!
I own several substantial photo books about various wars, but this one in particular is quite powerful and all-inclusive. The photos are terrific and the write-up is really superb; it's very impressive all-around. The book's heft might give you a hernia - but in all seriousness, I highly recommend this book.If you live in the NYC metro area, the photo exhibit for this book will be at the Brooklyn Museum through February 2.

Amazing pictures
Wonder what war time photographers do? This book is an amazing collection of unseen pictures that tell harsh stories. War is never good, so much suffering. But it makes me humble. This is a heavy book, very detailed in text and pictures.

A "must own" for the military family
Best compilation of world conflict photography you'll find in bookstores today. It will catalog every emotion you've experienced concerning involvement in armed conflict -- start to finish.

War/Photography - A brilliant collection
I first came across this book in a review in the excellent magazine "Black & White Photography" and it has lived up to its billing. The photographs are superb, some well known and some not; and the text is both mature and profound for a subject which is really about how we live our lives in relationship with one another, and how we live under stress, and how we learn to flourish in impossible circumstances. I have a good collection of such books and this is the best. NMC
