Recently handed this car off to our college-bound son. Had the brakes done, new tires, oil changed, wheel alignment. All done at local shops. Looked at the recommended service items, of which one was timing belt replacement. Called a few local shops, and the figures they were quoting were ridiculous. I had one say $2500!!! Did some online sleuthing, and discovered that the timing belt change (plus water pump) seemed to not be out of my capabilities. I have a decent collection of tools, and decided to go for it myself. A decent torque wrench and metric socket set is essential. There is a YouTube channel called MrSubaru, and this guy gives pretty clear instruction on how to do this. This Aisin kit is pretty much what is recommended for Subarus. The parts are Japan quality. Took me a number of hours to do this, but if I had to do it again I think I could probably do it in an hour, maybe 2. Car runs great, and should be set for another 100,000 miles. I also replaced the serpentine belt while doing this, as it needs to be removed anyway during the procedure. You’ll also need to get the Subaru coolant if you replace the water pump (why not, it’s in the kit!). I bought 2 gallons here on Amazon.
