Lippincott Illustrated Reviews: Biochemistry

Before I go into detail about the book's contents, I would like to point out that Lippincott Biochemistry is likely most valuable to first year medical students in their foundational classes as well as anyone taking biochem-heavy NBME's or shelf exams. (In my case, it's both- I am an M1 whose unit tests are all NBME's) As proficiently condensed as this book is, it may not be your best bet when studying for Step 1 unless you are very weak on certain subjects. I say this because not only is Step 1 unlikely to go into as much detail as a specific NBME, but you will probably be short on time. Board preparation is not the time to be learning all of the material from scratch. However, if you are willing to make the investment, the summaries and integrated diagrams at the ends of chapters may prove to be highly effective for quick review sessions.As a first year medical student, this is my favorite textbook. It skillfully integrates complicated pathways and provides exact page numbers when referencing relevant mechanisms that are specific to another chapter. It also provides condensed versions of certain mechanisms, highlighting only the steps that contribute to the pathway of interest.Additionally, Lippincott Biochem provides high-quality concept maps and condensed summaries at the ends of chapters that are extremely valuable for quick references and light review. It also integrates basic physiology and clinical correlations which really put the material into perspective. Personally, I find this helpful as biochemistry is one of the more abstract subjects. However, if you are not a fan of overlap with other subjects, these are often short introduction that take up no more than 1-2 pages and are easy to skip over.The chapter ends also have quiz questions with answers and explanations on the same page. Some of these are very difficult and helpful for solidifying concepts. However, there are not many of them. I would use another resource for practice.I highly recommend this textbook for learning biochemistry from scratch. Considering the grand scope of this subject, I would say the book is quite thin. It is masterfully condensed, effectively excluding irrelevantly convoluted material and non-essential experimental concepts that our PhD professors often love to dwell on. If you are studying for boards, consider using it as a reference, focusing mainly on diagrams and integrated summaries. It could also help you touch base with areas you did not learn well or study effectively during your pre-clinical years.Key words: condensed, integration, excellence

It was the required text for my grad program's macronutrients class. I almost didn't buy it because I have other similar books, but I'm glad I did. Topics are well organized and the material is thorough. You get both actual depth in each topic and easy-to-understand text.

Doesn't get much better than this. The end of chapter questions are excellent, and the concise writing is just what I needed to efficiently learn material for my exams. This book will be a good companion for my USMLE Step 1 preparation as well.
