Gestalt Therapy Verbatim

Must read
Interesting read - great way to "learn from experience" so to speak. Via reading transcripts of Perls in session, the read learns the application of Gestalt therapy rather than just learning about the application of Gestalt therapy. He also drops "pearls" of wisdom (could help the pun) regarding his theory of the human psyche throughout the book. I was amazed by some parts and cringed during others, but I've found this type of experiential working through is essential to good and efficient psychotherapy. I think I learned a lot about Perls' psyche too, but maybe I'm over thinking things; he seems to like being in the spotlight in front of the crowd and is particularly resistant to coming in too close contact / encounter with those who have boundary issues (both aspects seem ways to maintain self-determination). The latter aspect, avoiding allowing clients who want to become enmeshed reaching enmeshment in the therapeutic relationship, precludes integrating some aspects of psychodynamic therapy which focuses on the transference relationship. However, I can imagine adjusting both approaches to treatment in order to take advantage of transference exploration and interpretations, and maintaining "I am I and you are you" (or however Perls puts it).

Classic!
This is a must-have book for any gestalt loving folks. Book set up as case studies with dialogue between fritz pearls and client, for dreams. Very well done and to the point, helps you learn some techniques for your own dream interpretations. And it's hilarious too! Fritz does not edit himself one bit! Love him;)

New editing; preserves dynamic interaction with less clutter and clear communication
Gestalt Therapy Verbatim supplements mindfulness training dovetailing existential feelings with dialog. No where else have i found anything like it. Also an excellent source for historians seeking understanding of the 60 s revolution.

a nice bit of memorabilia from the 70's
a nice bit of memorabilia from the 70's. I picked it up now (2016) because I am taking some acting classes, Meisner-style. The Meisner exercises reminded me of Perls' therapy technique, so I thought I'd review it and mb write up the parallels.

The birth of Gestalt Therapy
Absolutely interesting! Highlights the goal of Gestalt - creating awareness - thru a series of encounters with his patients. Great work on dreams to unlock strengths and potential unknown to self. Frustration used in the most positive amazing way ...

Liberating
Wow, the way Fritz Perls tackle therapy in a pragmatic, engaging, and relentless manner is both daunting and refreshing at the same time! I actually 'live' by the Gestalt prayer now, and it is totally liberating!

Perls, Love him or Hate him?
The item shipped on time and I received it in perfect condition. The printing on the book is not perfect, several pages had words the were printed smaller and at an angle. You can read them, but when I buy a new book I expect it to be in perfect condition. I enjoyed the introduction by Michael Vincent Miller, who gave a personal view of Fritz Perls. I look forward to reading Perls first book, and comparing his views of Gestalt therapy. The book is interesting, but it is an unrealistic view of psychology today. The dream seminars were interesting, but some of the communication between Perls and participants, was difficult to understand. One really weird session with a lady that definitely appeared to be on drugs, Perls even asked her if she was on drugs. The book was around Perls height of popularity in the US, so he is very arrogant. It is difficult to read without thinking what a hypocrite. At the same time the book displays his genius. If you are a Perls fan I do suggest you get the book it is worth the read.

Brilliantly Insightful Probings into the Human Psyche
Fritz was a genius, and this book proves it. The therapeutic method he developed helped his clients get beneath the surface features of their difficulties and see and deal with the existential issues that underlay them. The transcripts the book contains reveal the dramatic results that his masterly application of the method could produce.

Important
An excellent article has been included to give perspective on Fritz Perls, who had a lot of valuable things to contribute to the world of psychotherapy.

well worth the effort. insightful and thought provoking.
Its very good, as an insight to fritz perls thought process its excellent. Things in Gestalt have moved on a little, so there are some things mentioned which would not now be considered normal practice or even useful, but that is the nature of and field in psychology, development and evolution. Fritz had some brilliant insights and this book has plenty to offer any psychotherapist or counsellor who wants to expand their understanding of the human condition. Please don't think of this as a text book full of instruction on how to "do" gestalt therapy, its not, and trying to emulate another therapist is pointless..
