MUST BUY BOOK for new dressage riders! Fun to read!
Wow! The textbook style bolded words, the real explanations finally of what “on the bit” is, the plentiful color photos, including real life people ... making mistakes during riding, with the author explaining what is going wrong in the picture (along w pics of the student doing the right thing) was all very helpful for people trying to figure out how to be a better rider and perfect their cues. This was so fun to curl up with. Extremely well organized content, funny comics, and the real life people in the book who ride just like you and me, all made this a very, very fun read. A MUST buy if you’re like me, contemplating many books. I am brand new to dressage, but jumped little jumps as a kid. Who knew all the intricacies and subtleties in dressage, and how come I didn’t learn this growing up, how did I think dressage was boring? I’m hooked!

Great Foundation for all English Disciplines
This is a great book either to refresh your memory or train a young horse or a horse who hasn't be properly trained in the past and especially good for riders who aren't regularly working with a trainer. This book takes you back to the basics and makes you understand how to become a better rider regardless of your riding aspirations. It emphasizes the need for balance, form and clarity. If you don't work with a trainer I would recommend having a friend, your mom, anyone take a video of you going through the basics and then play it back while reading through the first few chapters and using it as your 'eyes on the ground.' So many times you see unskilled riders throwing themselves on their horses' necks over fences and really just hanging on for their lives. After you read through a few chapters of this book you will really be able to identify common faults that most riders make and how NOT to join their ranks. It highlighted what I've been doing wrong so that I can more clearly communicate the aids. It also helped me troubleshoot what my horse's problem areas were, why they were happening, and how to correct them (95% of the time I was at least partially responsible). I would recommend this for all aspects of english riding as it is the foundation to all disciplines.

2nd MOST USED DRESSAGE BOOK I USE
I have an extensive library of books on horses overall, riding and above all: dressage. My favorite is A GUIDELINE FOR RIDERS AND JUDGES.Then Jane Savoie's Dressage 101.This is a book you can keep as an encyclopedia. Whenever I feel like I have forgotten something about HOW to do something, I turn to this book.Troubleshooting, refreshing details of what the moment should look like, rider's aids, correcting exercises, alternative ways of getting the result, this is like no other. The TRUE GENIUS of Jane Savoi are here visualization tricks. They are the gems of her teaching.

Best buy I've made.
Absolutely worth the money! I've recently picked up dressage to form a better foundation for my riding. This book is an awesome guide to sit down and read through. It breaks everything into chunks of easy to understand, clear knowledge that you can absorb quickly. Not to say there isn't a lot to go through! There's tons to this book and it packs in the useful information. It's worth every penny spent and is an awesome starting point for anyone who wants to learn to be a better rider.

Excellent Dressage Guide!
Purchased this book because I have seen Jane Savoie videos and think she really explains things well. The book does not disappoint. I have been training in dressage for a couple of years and need as much help as I can get mastering this difficult discipline. The book is such a great addition to my lessons! Jane has a way of presenting the material in a clear, concise way and she is good at using visualizations which I find very helpful. I would definitely recommend this book to both beginners and more advanced riders ~ everyone can benefit from improving the basics.

Clear and easy to read
This is a great book for someone who is interested in understanding the goals of dressage in order to practice clear communication with their horse. It would also be more than adequate for someone with intentions of competing in dressage as a means of visualizing and understanding what the various maneuvers look like when properly performed. I found the illustrations easier to comprehend than watching someone riding and demonstrating the manuevers because I was only able to visually capture the larger movements, not the subtleties that are so important. I bought the book as an adjunct to riding instruction, and found it to most helpful. Thank you to Jane Savoie for taking the time to make a highly complex pursuit understandable to an intermediate rider that was in need of additional information.

Jane Savoie is wonderful and this is a great go-to book to explain ...
Jane Savoie is wonderful and this is a great go-to book to explain dressage principles for people beginning their dressage journey, as well as those more experienced who want to go back and think and read about the basics from time to time. This book addresses everything from the very basic fundamentals, to troubleshooting more difficult movements (up through about fourth level). My copy is well-read and I've bought 2 to give as gifts for friends as well.

Straight forward easy to understand for beginners
I am new to dressage and have read many books on the subject, most which seem to complex. This book is straight forward. It is easy to understand, progressively building upon principles and exercises. The pictures are helpful and explaination of aids is easy to understand and apply. This book may be too basic for someone already familar with dressage, but would be a good outline for the experienced dressage person to use to brush up on technique or work a new horse through the levels.

Highly recommended for all
Originally bought as a gift for someone riding about novice standard but read it cover to cover before gifting it and have now bought myself a copy. Excellent clear description on the aids with photos of the average horse which help explain and add to the text rather than just being pretty page fillers. With the photos you can see the difference in the horse ridden front to back and vice versa, a small difference but it's there and I can easily see it in real life as well now. The clearest description on how to ride a half halt and how to teach it to the horse I have ever seen. I've read a lot of the classic dressage books, and as my riding has improved they make more sense now but for those newer to dressage would probably find them too vague like I did. I wish I'd found this book earlier, I'm competing PSG but still found value in it, it's a tremendous resource and I couldn't recommended it more.

Excellent book for step by step instructions for applying rider's aids
Best book I own and I have bought a fair few dressage books which still leave me confused. Would highly recommend it for anyone looking for simple explanations and clarity of riders aids to improve your horses outline and paces. I have even put into practise her tips for improving transitions following her step by step instructions for applying the aids and I have seen an improvement with my own horse already. Am very impressed. This is the first review I have written as I feel this book deserves the praise. Favourite book in my collection!

A great book full of useful tips, learning and insight to take your riding further
A book for anybody interested in dressage and who masters the basics on horse-back.Jane Savoie both inspires and coaches the reader to develop, try new things and learn new skills or better understand certain movements. It is not just about 'how to' but the very important 'why' as well.Jane Savoie uses simple language and the accompanying imagery is very useful to illustrate her points. It is definitely a book I would recommend, and I find it more useful than many other dressage books as it really describes movements, aids and actions in an easy to understand way, as well as explaining clearly some of the key basic cornerstones of dressage, and why they are so important.
