Those are not accurate depictions of MSM production. The most common method is a reaction of sulfur with methane. In this process methanol (ethyl alcohol from natural gas) is combined with sulfur (hydrogen sulfide or carbon disulfide) in a vapor phase catalytic reaction to form DMS and methylmercaptan (MM; primarily used to make the essential amino acid l-methionine, which is a common dietary supplement).
