Sony BDPS6200 3D Blu-ray Player with Wi-Fi and 4K Upscaling (2014 Model)

I bought this unit to replace my Sony BDP S790 which lasted only 10 months. I am using it with my Bose Lifestyle 135 (which I have been extremely happy with by the way). I was very nervous about setting up the the new BDP S6200 but it was very easy. The Bose system stepped me through transferring control from the Sony remote to the Bose remote. Then I was able to use my Bose remote to step through all the Sony set up steps. The on screen process was simple and clear and easy to follow -even for non technical person like myself. The unit easily found my Apple wifi network immediately. (fyi WPS = your wifi network password). Once the set up was complete, I was confused when none of the streaming services icons appeared on my menu. It took a minute to figure out that I had to go back to the Sony remote and press the SEN button to initiate download of the software that enables display and use of Netflix, Amazon, Pandora, etc. Once I did that, the download process proceeded seamlessly (The process did take around 15 minutes and executed two seemingly equivalent downloads. That was curious but not an issue). The first couple times I used the unit, it locked up (could have been because I was still getting used to which buttons to push on the remote and how to use the menus). I had to unplug the unit to re boot it on two occasions on the first use of the unit but hasn't happened since. Also, Amazon prime streaming locked up once during my first use and I had to re boot but again that hasn't happened since. The DVD playing is fine. The unit itself is very small and compact. It is essentially flat on top despite the image online so it can stack easily with other components. The unit construction is more flimsy than the BDP S790 but really who cares about that? I am very happy with this product in the first few day of ownership and highly recommend it.

I just started using this Blu-Ray player and I have, so far, been happy with it's operation. The main reason I purchased this brand and model is that it will play back multi-channel SACD's. I have tested it with Blu-Rays, DVD's, CD's and SACD's and it has worked flawlessly. It also has a lot of streaming network choices which I have only begin to explore. I have already set it up for VUDU, Sony Entertainment and Amazon Instant Video's and it works great. The main menu is a little confusing at first compared to my last Blu-Ray but you get used to it. It is connected to a Yamaha 7.2 receiver Yamaha RX-V675 7.2 Channel Network AV Receiver with Airplay via HDMI (HDMI is required to play SACD's) which is then connected to my TV via HDMI and it all works great together. I get 7.1 audio from Blu-Ray's, 5.1 audio from DVD's and some SACD's and 2.0 audio from CD's as expected. I also tested it with a DTS encoded multi-channel audio only disc and that worked great too. I use a direct wired network connection so I can't comment about its wireless network capabilities. I also don't have a 3D or 4K TV so I can't comment about those functions either. It is a rather small device for all its capabilities but smaller is better I guess. I recommend this player for many reasons even if you don't need the SACD function and the price is not bad either for all of it's abilities. Update: What a bummer, this unit quickly started to lock up constantly and require unplugging and re-plugging to reset as other reviews have stated. When it is locked up with "off" flashing on the display it also locks up the local section of my home wired network. That took me a little while to figure out the cause because I didn't know the player was malfunctioning until I seen the flashing display. The main problem seems to be with the network functions, after using the network and attempting to turn the player off it locks up with the flashing display requiring a unplug and re-plug. Even after the power cycle it will refuse to connect to the network and again lock up. I had upgraded the firmware to the latest version right away so that isn't the cause, unless the problem is with the latest upgrade. If I didn't need the unique functions of this device I think I may have returned it and bought a different brand even though Sony usually makes a quality product. I am going to return it for a replacement unit and hopefully get one that works correctly. Thanks to the other reviewers for letting me know that this is not a unique problem or some problem with my setup, otherwise I would be chasing my tail trying to figure it out. I will update after receiving and testing the replacement. Update 2: The original player started working correctly again with no changes made to anything just as quickly as it started to malfunction, it seems like a real intermittent problem. I am going to go with the replacement. The replacement arrived, thanks to Amazon's great return policy and quick shipping, and I installed it. So far no problems, performs as well as the original one did at first and I also upgraded the new one to the latest firmware. I tried to play everything like I did to the first one but I concentrated on the network functions as that's where the problem seems to show up and everything was good. This really is a great player if it works like it should. There must be a problem with some of Sony's players as there are quite a number of good reviews for this player but a significant number of bad reviews most of which say the same thing about the locking up and stalling while using network functions. There are always some bad reviews about anything but it seems like this is a legitimate problem. I will update this again if anything negative happens to this new replacement player. I am hoping that this one meets Sony's usual quality standards. Update 3; Working great, no problems. I would recommend this player, but I would also recommend checking it out thoroughly after receiving it to make sure everything works as it should especially the network functions. If not, Amazon will replace it with one that does work. If you don't use the network functions then you should not have any problems at all with this player.

Really disappointed with this. I have one of the predecessors, the BDP-S580, which worked great from the start until it died a few months back, about two years after I got it. Not as long as I would've liked, but not an awful run either. I decided to get one of the newer models of the same blu-ray player, and decided on this one after much research. I've had problems since day 1. First, connecting it to the internet was a nightmare. I'm not a tech genius or anything, but I don't have problems with basic stuff like this. I would get it all plugged up, and it would say that it was connected but then none of the 'apps' (? netflix, pandora, amazon instant) would work. They all said the device was not connected. Go back to the set up screen, run diagnostics, etc., everything would say it was connected. Back to apps, it says it's not connected. Infuriating. Tried wired vs. wireless, nothing worked. Talked to a rep on chat online, he walked me through everything I had already done, nothing worked. He then told me I would have to set the IP address manually on the machine. Yeah, needless to say it was far from an easy, simple setup. I brought it to my parents house to try to connect to their network (to rule out the possibility of the unit itself being defective), and it worked just fine. Brought it back home and it hooked up no problem. I have no idea why, I didn't do anything different. But then- streaming shows on Netflix, it freezes up or rebuffers constantly, often times never coming back up, you have to go all the way back to the home screen, restart Netflix, restart the show, etc. During an hour long show it probably does this 10ish times. Very frustrating! Makes it really hard to watch a show when you're constantly having interruptions and having to restart. We thought maybe it was our internet connection (it is hard wired to the player, not set on wireless) but we have no problems with internet on any of our other devices in the house. Now it is completely freezing up on Pandora (no response to any buttons) and when you turn it off, it just flashes 'off' forever and you have to unplug and replug. I should have returned this thing but now it's past the return period with Amazon. TL;DR problems since day 1, wouldn't connect to internet, now freezes/rebuffers on netflix and pandora, sometimes requiring a hard reset.

Considering that the real HDMI 2.0 4K Blu-rays are not available yet or at least I could not find one, this 1080P 4K Upscale Blu-ray does the job and looks great. I was surprised as to how light the unit is. Build quality is not the best which is is obviously engineered down to a cost savings, but what the external chassis lacks the electronics gain in my opinion. This unit is fast, loads a blu-ray much faster than my older Pioneer and the video quality upscaled to 4K is fantastic! Color reproduction, resolution and sound are all top-notch. The only reason I did not give this unit a 5-star is because the wireless setup is lacking and there seems to be a bug with the DNS info obtained from the router. I spent hours trying to figure out what the hell was going on when I could do a software upgrade, use the internal web browser but could not connect to Netflix or use the SEN. (Sony Entertainment Network). I finally called Sony and got some guy in India, what a surprise, no help there. This guy was clueless. I proceeded to do a google search and found some info on the DNS issue, seems Sony has this problem in multiple models for quite some time now. I went back to Network Setup, selected wireless and setup the network with a static (fixed) IP, gateway and used the Google DNS 8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4 and once I did this, all worked fine. I know this is not an issue on my network because I have about 12-14 network devices running with no issues. Since setting this up as mentioned above, all has worked great, the SEN and Netflix work very well and the unit found my servers such as my Plex media server and shares no problem. Once you get by the network issue, the unit is near 5-stars. The video engine makes it worth the while, 4K looks just awesome! (1080P scaled to 4K obviously.)

I had a problem with lockups described in the one star reviews. I returned one unit to Amazon for a replacement and that one also had lockups. Since I have some technical background I took it upon myself to see if I could resolve the issues. The Sony S6200 is the only unit with the specs and features available in this price range. Further, the quality of the images was excellent. It played the latest Bluray disks and has a very friendly interface that allows quick access to many features including a very fine Miracast feature that mirrors smartphone screens to the TV. In my case the wifi signal from my Verizon router had to travel some distance through walls and signal strength tended to be very variable. Also, I found our electric power suffers from short duration drops. The new LED lights I installed our kitchen flicker a lot. My solution to the problems - installing a MoCA wifi extender and a battery power back-up unit. Since the installation of those two items, I have not had any further lockups and stellar performance from the Sony Bluray player. Verizon markets an Actiontec wifi extender that runs off of the same coaxial cable as the set-top box. The same extender is sold on Amazon. Installation is very simple. The coaxial cable is unscrewed from the back of the set-top box and a splitter is installed so one output goes to the set-top box and the other goes to the wifi extender. The extender comes with the splitter and two short coaxial cables. The extender has two RJ45 jacks. I was able to run two short cat five cables from the extender to my Sony Bluray and my Samsung LED TV. Both the bluray and the TV quickly picked up the internet. You will have to re enter the Security codes which are the same for the main router. The BDP-S6200 lives at the top of Sony's North American bluray players range for 2014. This player is essentially a replacement to the well liked 2012 BDP-S790 Sony BDPS790 3D Blu-ray Player with Wi-Fi with a few features removed, but a few features added. More on that in a moment. The player keeps the familiar XMB (Cross Media Bar) interface just like its previous players. Its functional but I can't help feel its days are numbered since Sony has done away with it on their TV range. You can choose to start the player in the Sony Entertainment Network portal if you wish ... but it really doesn't offer you anything different from starting the player normally within the XMB. This top player gets a dual core processor (like the BDP-S790) so disks load fast and app navigation is zippy. A good test is to use the Youtube app that seems pretty CPU intensive. You can normally weed out under performers with that app .... but the BDP-S6200 handles YouTube very well. App support is solid enough, with new a new Crackle app that supports Crackle favorites. There is a new Hulu app too, but that was released across last years players too. The player also sees the new Netflix interface which is very nice too. The player also features a new Amazon App for 2014. It's certainly more visual than the older one but I think it's going to take a few software updates to get it tweaked just right. The player also has the Opera TV store with a bunch of apps in that too ... so you should be well supported for apps. Note, often asked but there is no HBO Go app on this player. The player itself, I think looks very stylish ... however if you are looking for more conservative styling, you may want to pick up a older BDP-S790. It doesn't seem as solid as the older BDP-S790 ... but it seems many mass market electronic manufacturers are heading in this direction as a whole, so I'm not really surprised here. Please note though, that despite Amazon's or Sony product description, there is only 1 HDMI output on the player !! Now, if you already own a 2013 x100 player from Sony, such as the BDP-5100 Sony BDP-S5100 3D Blu-ray Disc Player with Wi-Fi , what does this new player offer? You will get the benefit of Super bit mapping (SBM) which improves color banding evident on internet video, improved DVD upscaling with additional levels of picture adjustment, IP Noise reduction pro for internet video, new audio enhancer, the new Netflix app, a new Crackle app and maybe a new Amazon app once it comes on line. For 2012 owners that have the BDP-S790, upgrading to a BDP-S6200 they get the benefit of the new audio enhancer, the new netflix app (with 5800kbps support), a new Crackle app and maybe a new Amazon app. They also get improved codec support in MKVs with MPEG2 and VC-1 video codecs. If they have a 2013 or above Sony TV, and appropriate BD media, they can take advantage of extended color (Triluminos). They also get screen mirroring with Android phone and tablets. They loose the extra HDMI output, Skype support and arguably less solid build. Again the player does not include a HDMI cable so buyer be pre-warned. Also, as with new bluray players, there is no analog outputs on the player so you're TV must support HDMI. There is a digital coaxial output for receivers that dont support HDMI for audio. If you do buy one of these and can't figure out how to get HD audio (DTS-MA or Dolby TrueHD) output from the player be sure to switch off BD-Audio mix AND the audio enhancer in the audio settings. Overall, its another solid Bluray player from Sony with some marginal improvements over last years player ... but nothing earth shattering. Recommended. Thanks for reading. - update 3/22/14 The new Amazon App is now up and running, as is VUDU on the BDP-S6200. You will need to download a firmware update to enable these apps.

If you're in the market for a blu-ray player, first time or replacement/upgrade, then this is a good choice. The picture quality is better than any blu-ray player I've owned before, S370 and S590, or the Roku, or the Apple TV, or the Android streaming stick I've used. For picture quality it's a solid choice. In movies I've watched for 20 years or more, I'm noticing more detail, subtler shading, increased sense of depth as graduation in bokeh effect are more distinct. Streaming services, Hulu, and Netflix, etc have the latest look, features, and feel. The player can stream the top quality streams from services... but the apps are buggy and regularly getting updated sometimes features added. Files played from USB or locally streamed via DLNA play smooth and look great. The Super Bit Mapping (SBM) makes a great improvement to picture quality increased detail and reduced banding, but the IP Noise Reduction seems to blur if not used with full HD sources, or older filmed material so I leave it off. There are very advanced picture quality settings available, so picture quality can be optimized/tweaked however you need. I just leave it set at defaults except to tame annoying ditherting, but these options can be used to recover poorly transferred material or respond to viewing conditions such as bright room without needing to change settings in the screen that is calibrated. Upgrading from a Sony BDP-S590 I did have to make slight adjustment to my TV calibration for black and white levels, but after turning off all the preset tweaks and ran calibration again I was back where I started... a testament to Sony's dedication to rendering accuracy in their deigns. REVISED 11//14: Notably, this player doesn't decode or bitstream multichannel TrueHD Dolby to PCM if the source is USB or DLNA and if you try it you'll get stereo only. It does pass the TrueHD multichannel out, from blu-ray disc, through the HDMI and the receiver can decode. DTS is handled without any limitation. To know whether this TrueHD limitation is an issue, or not, for you... check what you have that the only multichannel track is TrueHD. I was very surprised to find I had only two, and one also had a better PCM 5.1 audio track anyway. For whatever reason, this player is pickier about the discs, surface, finalizing, surface color, whatever it is... but these problem discs play fine on my S590 player. I've come across a couple bugs. I can ignore, work around them, or pull the plug to reset the player. They seem to be in the Sony firmware/onboard software issues. The player has the latest firmware and it's been on the market almost a year, so still having this number of bugs is very unusual. Also, despite the dual-core processor, the cross-bar interface looks jaded and sluggish (though the cutesy transition animation is likely to blame), and the optional SEN screen interface pretty, but is unstable. The player plays SACDs and it decodes FLAC (though not gapless) to PCM out over HDMI is a great for hi-rez hi-fi. It can do more hi-rez audio than those, but they're what I'm using and they work great on this player. Do you need this player over the next model down, and pay the $50 extra, or is it even worth upgrading? Do you need the extra audio features, or is the SBM worth that? For me, the SBM, added support for hi resolution audio, and the premium streaming quality, make the premium worth it - even with the bugs. Your mileage may vary. I rated this a 3-star product.... 5 stars for picture quality and streaming, but 1 star off the the price, and 1 star off for bugs and being sluggish. As firmware updates change the performance, I'll post review updates. Update: May 2015. Still having bug fixes by updates, and bugs added by updates. What a mess. I don't know if it's Sony or Google/Hulu/Amazon that are to blame but it's shocking, a year later and it's still ongoing. I dropped the rating to 2-Stars, "I don't like it" cause I don't. I won't be buying any Sony streaming players in the future. Sony support have started a dialog in the comments. Feel free to review that, and comment.

This product plays dvd's without difficulties and the picture is very sharp. However, I recently became an Amazon prime member primarily to stream movies. This DVD player is wireless and has the Amazon app and streams the movies with nice video clarity, but after the movie has played for about 30 minutes, the remote will not work any longer ( no pause, stop, etc). After the movie has finished, you must power off the DVD player but the "off" display just blinks and does not power down unless I unplug the unit. Sometimes a movie will stream without problems and I thought a fix had been applied until last night and the old problem resurfaced. After researching this product, I find that many users have the same difficulties and do not know if the problem lies with Amazon or Sony. These are both well respected brands and hopefully they will figure this out sooner rather than later. I continually check for software updates but no fix has been found. I do not subscribe to Netflix and do not know if that is also problematic.
