The Palm Abbe PA202 is a dual scale digital refractometer with scales for measuring both Brix and Refractive index. The PA202 measures Brix from 0 to 85 Brix, which is considerably higher than the Brix scale in the PA201. Brix is a measure of sugar concentration but is also used for measuring the concentration of many other fluids such as metalworking fluids, industrial lubricants, and other industrial chemicals. Also included in the PA202 refractometer, is a second scale for measuring the refractive index of a fluid. Refractive index is a physical property of a fluid that is related to the speed at which light passes through it. The denser the solution, the slower light passes through it and the higher the refractive index. The Palm Abbe refractometer is fast, convenient, and easy to use. Simply place a drop or two of fluid in the stainless steel well and press a button. The custom-designed microprocessor delivers a nearly instantaneous readout in degrees Brix. Nonlinear temperature compensation is automatic and insures that fluids read between 0 and 50 °C (+32 to 122 °F) are measured accurately. Calibration is automatic and does not require the use of special calibration solutions, or tools. The Palm Abbe refractometer automatically calibrates itself to water and is ready to use in seconds. It also has a Refractive Index scale. We don't know as much about using refractometers for brewing, but I found a very good discussion of this at https://byo.com/article/refractometers/ Possibly you need a hydrometer. **Q: Does this device measure the sugar content of a liquid that contains alcohol? Will it measure concentration in grams/ounce or is there a conversion?** A: Refractometers ca only measure binary fluids. Our PA202 is a two scale unit that measures in BRIX or Refractive Index so either reading would have to be converted to any other unit of measure. If your liquid has enough alcohol to change the refractive index then the refractometer will not be able to read the fluid. It is way off when comparing to multiple readings from other devices.** A: Hi Brian: we recommend a Zero Set Calibration daily as follows: 1) ensure measuring surface is clean and dry, 2) place a few drops of distilled water on the measuring surface, 3) close the cover and let sample/instrument equalize temperature, 4) turn on unit (press GO), press MENU going to screen that says "Set Zero?", 5) press GO to set. The refractive index range is 1.3330 to 1.5000. This is NOT a TDS meter which uses conductivity to measure the refractive index.
