The bestselling first edition of Essential Linguistics presented the basic concepts of linguistics in everyday language, and showed the connections between linguistic theory and classroom practice. David and Yvonne Freeman make the Second Edition even more valuable by: clearly explaining English phonology, morphology, and syntax and the implications for teaching using the International Phonetic Alphabet to prepare students for the Praxis examination including chapters on first and second language acquisition research and theories reviewing ESL teaching methods. With examples, activities, and end-of-chapter applications that link linguistic theory and classroom practice, the Freemans show teachers how to use their new understandings of linguistics to help student learning. Essential Linguistics , Second Edition will be your go-to resource for all things linguistics, now better than ever. Review: A Great Introduction to Linguistics - Written by a husband and wife team, this textbook is a kind of a beginners guide to linguistics. It's designed to be useful to teachers of ESL, teaching all levels of learners. Though it could serve those also just interested in linguistics for linguistics sake. It's chock full of useful and interesting bits. I would definitely recommend it. Review: Great book, wish it covered script/written language as well - I love this book. It's really interesting and helpful for those interested in linguistics, TESOL, or language education in general. I would, however, liked to have seen a chapter on script (written language/handwriting/etc).

In depth reading about linguistics focused on what a teacher needs to know. It probably is a little more than you need to know, but as it explains the background is good for better being able to analyze the language for students. Applicable to both first and second language acquisition.
