Short-ish flute but still a good buy
Another great value from Woodstock. I put an Ellsworth-style profile on this and this thing hogged right through some semi-dry Oak I was turning into a bowl. The flute is on the short side though, I have use a 75mm protrusion with my fingernail jig and the clamp is already very near to the end of the flute. I'll have to grind flats onto the round bar to keep using the jig which isn't a huge deal but I'd prefer not to. However with the 3/8" diameter bar I can see how they'd want to keep the flute short in order to make the tool more stiff.

Exactly what I wanted
I wanted to learn bowl turning using a bowl gouge. Scrapers will work but you get a better finish with the gouge. Rather than spend $100 for a big name gouge I decided to buy this less expensive one. Learning to sharpen a bowl gouge to your own special requirements can burn up a lot of steel and I would rather use a less expensive one to do that. I have turned a number of bowls using this gouge and I have found that the technique is not as difficult as I thought it would be. This gouge is HSS and holds its edge well.I'm glad I bought it.

Nice tool
Arrived as promised. It’s a nice tool that came sharp out of the box. Only used it once so far but it did the job.

Poor metal - Instant Blueing when Sharpening
Was looking for a cheap gouge to use with a bottoming grind, but this was a waste of money. Whatever the “high speed steel” they used for this tool is, it blues almost instantly even on a low speed grinder with a 180 grit CBN wheel.

good quality for the price
I like this gouge. I'll buy another bigger one soon. I use it on every bowl I've turned this year. quite happy with it.

Very Good Tool.
I suppose people looking for reviews on lathe tools want Rockwell hardness and the like. All I can tell you is that it is easy to sharpen, holds an edge, and cuts very well. After sharpening, it is a good idea to strop the edge. Also, instead of sharpening every time the edge gets dull, just give it a few passes on the strop and the edge will be razor sharp.
