Black Market Clash

I guess this smallish EP (about 2" smaller than standard album size) by The Clash isn't as rare as I thought it was. The seller or sellers seemed enthusiastic and pretty darn cool (they'd have to be if they have this and similar inventory). I bought this when it first came out in 1979 and wore out the grooves and scratched it up listening to it so much and recording many cassette's for my friends. I kind of forgot about it for a time (years), then remembered it and could not find it anywhere (before PCs, internet and dumb fones). I found one a couple years back and it was selling for 180.00. I couldn't afford it at the time, so when I found this one for about thirty bucks I was suspicious, but I had to try. I got the EP and when I opened it, it was still in the original shrink wrap with an ON SALE price sticker @ 3.99 wich was covering a 5.99 price tag. I am very pleased. This EP brings back a lot of good memories. My mother who is 85 started singing along to it recently, she loved this album back in 1979 also. I don't usually rate products, purchases and shopper-seller experiences, but I had to for this Clash album, arguably one of the best Rock & Roll bands in the history of the Universe. Bill

I see the current prices on this import and think, wow, I got a great deal on this little baby. I may resell it for a several hundred percent gain as I as not as enamored of this recording as I was when I was younger, smokin' the ganga, mon.I had Super Black Market Clash for a short while, years ago, and put it on the CD player and said, "This is not what I thought I bought," so I waited, and waited, etc., for Black Market Clash to come out on CD. When I found it, I thought, "This is a scam. I'm going to lose my money." But a week later, it showed up. I immediately put it into my ipod and played it from end to end.My feeling at the end? Ehh-Frankly, it's good, but probably nothing could match the anticipation of waiting and my memory of the quality of this recording. Add to it that I am 20+ years older than when I first heard Black Market Clash, sober, etc. For me, Black Market Clash was a point in time album, with memories of great times with close friends.One last word: If you can get this CD for a deal, pick it up as Bank Robber/Robber Dub is a very, very good song, regardless of anything.

Not reviewing the album, which is excellent. Just wanted to say that the 10" vinyl pressing is quite good. Clean sound with no surface noise.

great repress of this essential recording! Drastic Plastic repressed these tracks right. there will be some justice tonight.

This is the one I had been looking for. I used to have the album, then I sold it and thought I was buying it on cd but bought Super Black Market Clash. The songs are not the same. Bank Robber is hashed up on Super. It is much better on this one.

The music on the album is great but did not like the sound. My feeling is because it's a 10" record of a full length album the sound is compressed also got a few skips as well. If you're interested in this vinyl album get the 12"

Not a huge fan of the Clash, but got that song bank robber stuck in my head. This album is worth it simply for that song!

It's a great record. Not only is it unique, but the songs will make you wear it out. Well worth buying.

Black Market Clash was a compilation originally issued in 1980 for the American market, specifically to gather together a few Clash oddities previously unissued in that country. The CD edition stayed true to the vinyl release in name and tracklist, but was vastly extended in the 1990s and reissued as Super Black Market Clash. However, it's important not to make the mistake of thinking that Super Black Market Clash is just Black Market Clash with a pile of bonus tracks. The difference goes quite a bit further.Black Market Clash features the 1977 recording of Capitol Radio One (originally available only as an NME freebie), Super Black Market Clash replaces this with a re-recording from 1979 re-titled Capital Radio Two. Black Market Clash features the 6 minute long Bankrobber/Robber Dub, Super Black Market Clash replaces this with just the 4 minute long Robber Dub. Black Market Clash uses an alternate mix of Pressure Drop, Super Black Market Clash uses the original mix from the Tommy Gun b-side. Black Market Clash uses an edited take of Justice Tonight/Kick It Over (the dub mix of Armagideon Time), Super Black Market Clash uses an unedited take which runs almost 2 minutes longer.So although at first glance the shared portions of the two compilations may appear the same, their content is actually quite different. It's probably also worth mentioning that although Armagideon Time and Cheat appear on Black Market Clash, they are excluded from Super Black Market Clash.And despite the original Black Market Clash CD only having a running time of 35 minutes as opposed to the nearly 80 minutes of Super Black Market Clash, its track selection (with almost the entirety of the latter half being a Dub Reggae experience) flows in a nicely concise manner which is completely lost with the hugely extended and stylistically expanded running order of Super Black Market Clash.As for the mastering, Black Market Clash CD is excellent, sounding like an old-school straight transfer with no additional digital fiddling about, very analogue. It's a really nice disc to play loud.So even with Black Market Clash having seemingly now been replaced by the "upgrade" of Super Black Market Clash, there remain more than enough reasons to purchase the original.5 stars.
