Starring Academy Award nominees Steve Carell (Foxcatcher, The Big Short) and Timothée Chalamet (Call Me by Your Name), Beautiful Boy is a deeply moving portrait of a family’s unwavering love and commitment to each other in the face of their son’s addiction and his attempts at recovery. As Nic repeatedly relapses, the Sheff’s are faced with the harsh reality that addiction is a disease that does not discriminate and can hit any family at any time. From the producers of Moonlight and 12 Years a Slave and adapted from David and Nic Sheff’s best-selling memoirs by BAFTA Award winner Luke Davies (Lion), Beautiful Boy is a searingly honest account of the ways addiction can destroy lives and the power of love to rebuild them.“One of the most essential films that could exist right now” Collider“An emotional powerhouse… impossible to forget” Rolling Stone“Timothee Chalamet and Steve Carrell shine” ★ ★ ★ ★ The Independent★ ★ ★ ★ ★ Culture Whisper★ ★ ★ ★ The TelegraphSpecial Features:The Cinematic Journey FeaturetteInterview with Steve Carrell and Timothee ChalametInterview with David Sheff and Nic Sheff Review: Outstanding - This was honestly such a beautifully made film that brought to life real story of drug addictions. Watching the film made me cry through the beginning to end. Timothee did such a fantastic job playing Nick, he brought real emotions into his acting that came across as being realistic and hit straight to the heart. Timothee and Steve brought the father and son's stories to life through this film. This is a film that everyone should watch on how addictions is disease and not a way to get attention. Review: A graphic account of dealing with addiction - A moving and insightful film, looking at how a family, in particular the father/son relationship, deal with a teenager going through addiction. Based on a true story. Brilliant performances all round, Steve Carell and Timothee Chalamet are compelling as the father and son. Really hitting home the dilemma between supporting and enabling, and exploring the psychological effects addiction has on the the addict and family members dealing with them, and the strain this puts on their relationships. Beautifully filmed, and with a great sound track, hitting home the sentiment of the film. An emotional watch, get some tissues ready, you are going to need them. Well worth a watch.

A special film.
This is a hard hitting, quite brilliantly acted film. It time frames are sometimes difficult to get your head around, as it flips backwards and forwards, but its impact will stay with you for a long time. It pulls no punches, and at times it is difficult to watch, with some very harrowing scenes, but it is quite superb. Almost got a 5 stars. Sad, traumatic, honest and brutal.

Moving Heartfelt True Powerful Movie
As painful as it was to watch this movie I am glad I did. So many have walked the path and are still on the same path. My son survived through so many ups and downs and each day I still wait for the relapse which I hope and pray will never come, one day at a time. My son knows how fragile the balance of his life is and I know how hard it is for him, for now all I can do is love him and be here for him. He is doing great. This movie shares what it is really like for the family and gives hope to others and reality to the world. Fantastic film.

An amazing and honest portrayal of addiction.
This film is absolutely fantastic. It is heart warming, heartwrenching, funny and melancholic. It pulls you into the complex world of addiction and a fathers battle to bring back the son he once had before drugs took over. The relationship dynamics between father and son is exquisitely done - co-dependancy, the pull between love and hate, the anger and hatred towards substance abuse, the need to help and love and to let go is all there in both ugliness and beauty. The actors of course have made this film what it is but if you ever wanted to know the effects of drug addiction on the user and the people around them, particularly their families this film hits every single notch on the bed post.

A good portrayal but sanitised
I read Nic’s book before watching the film. I haven’t read the father’s. I don’t feel I missed anything by not reading the second book, after watching the film, though maybe I have. Essentially it portrays a sequence of relapses by Nic and the affects on his father and near family which is believable and moving. However, it misses out almost all of the consequences of the descent of Nick into hard addiction, for example him turning to prostitution in SF and dealing etc. I think the film on its own is insufficient to portray Nic’s early life as an addict and therefore I suggest reading his book. The most disturbing statistic is the very low success rate for recovery services, single digits in fact. I’ve heard this from friends who are professional drug counsellors too. It’s a good film and worth watching but treat it as a filtered introduction to the disaster of addition.

Please watch. Moving and relevant to the issues faced by youth today
Tragic and moving - parents this is a watch you’ll never forget - mainly due to the lesson we can learn about judgement. Not everyone with drug addiction comes from a bad family or a no good upbringing. Addiction is unstoppable without support and this movie really magnifies the lengths parents will go to to save their children. Emotional but wonderful and having lost a school friend at a young age to drugs, it really resonated. Great writing, excellent acting.

I've seen many films on this subject, such as Go Ask Alice, Less Than Zero and Trainspotting. But none of these films moved me as much as Beautiful Boy. This movie shows the devastation drug addiction does to families. The cast is brilliant.
