The cinematic equivalent of zen koans, The Taisho Trilogy ( Zigeunerweisen (1980), Kagero-za (1981), Yumeji (1991)) are three riddles- confounding, meditative, absurd, yet utterly fascinating. Director Seijun Suzuki, best known for his crazy, ultra-stylish gangster films of the 1960's, concentrated his matured artistic creativity into this intellectually challenging trio of supernatural tales set in the Taisho period of early 20th century Japan, an elegant fusion of Eastern and Western cultures. Poetic, rich and strange, featuring outstanding photography, editing, costumes, music, beautifully vivid color, visually arresting set pieces, these are not horror movies, but eerie, deeply perplexing puzzles, populated with ghostly characters and unexplained occurrences, focusing on dreams over reality and delirium over narrative, best appreciated by using their dark symbolism and themes as guides and going along with the cinematic experience. Arrow's Blu Ray set has excellent restorations of the films, with a couple of interviews and an insightful introduction of each film by preeminent scholar of Asian cinema, Tony Rayns. Highly recommended to those looking for something unconventional- these films should be more well known. Also recommended: the Japanese films Kwaidan, and Empire Of Passion, or the European films That Obscure Object Of Desire, Last Year At Marienbad, even The Saragosa Manuscript.

Sin duda alguna recomiendo por completo esta trilogía, la cual es bastante parecida en su gramática audiovisual a las tres provocaciones finales de Luis Buñuel: El Discreto Encanto de la Burguesía, La Vía Láctea y El Fantasma de la Libertad en tanto que evocan un lenguaje más parecido a la forma en la que se comportan los sueños que la realidad misma. Respecto a la edición en Blu Ray, ésta es impecable.

清順監督作品に触れた最初は草月シネマテークで上映された『刺青一代』でした。遠い記憶で、草月シネマテークで見たと刻み込まれているので、見た場所については確証がない。しかし、最初の清順作品として見たことの鮮やかさは耄碌ジジイと化した今現在でもはっきりと脳裏に刻まれている。ほぼ半世紀前のことでした。それから次に『東京流れ者』『殺しの烙印』と見て清順ファンになり、1968年に堀久作により不当にも解雇されて、映画人が呼びかけて清順共闘会議が出来た折には最初の集会に参加、デモ行進で都心を練り歩きました。デモのしっぽの方に付いていると、前の方から革マルの集団が折り返してきて、いま「革マル粉砕と言ったのは誰だ！」といちゃもんがつけられて、隊列がちょっとゴチャゴチャしました。だれもそんなことは言っていなかったし不思議でしたが、解散後、日大全共闘の芸術学部の闘争委員会が革マルと少しぶつかっていて、大事になりそうなら、自分らも芸闘委の救援にいくつもりだったよ、と創造社のグルーブの人が語っていたのを覚えています。さて、それはさておき、“THE TAISHO TRILOGY”を日本国内品を贖うより数段に廉価であるという理由のみでもとめてみました。自宅にあるパナソニックのブルーレイ・プレイヤー（DMP-BDT180-K）での視聴で問題は何もありませんでした。『ツィゴイネルワイゼン』（1980年）『陽炎座』（1981年）『夢二』（1991年）ここには日活退社後に完熟した清順美学の粋が詰め込まれているように思います。その高踏さに目が眩みます。一般的な映画ファンとしてはまず大谷直子さんの美女ぶりにそそられるものがありました。それを支える大楠道代さん、チョイっとイカしてます。大楠道代さんは『陽炎座』でも不動の美女ぶりで、クールでこんなにいい女だから、北野武監督は『座頭市』に据えてきたのだと思いました。三部作を締めくくる『夢二』で注目は、ほんの少しの出番でしたが、余貴美子さんに驚きました。本来は毬谷友子さんや宮崎万純さんに注目しなければならないのでしょうが、自分としては、「あっ、貴美子さんがこんなところへ出てきてる」と、その方にビックリして、あらためてこの時代に脚光を浴びて来た彼女の耐力を見た思いと、清順監督の起用の目の付け所のような潜在力に感心してしまいました。この三部作にはもう日活時代のお仕着せは見られません。見事な清順美学の挽歌です。清順監督はこの後2001年に江角マキコを使った『ピストルオペラ』、それからしばらく置いて2005年にチャン・ツィイー、オダギリジョーで『オペレッタ狸御殿』を最後に仕事を終えました。予定作品はあったものの、それはもう闇の中です。そのことを考えるとこの三部作が清順監督の辿り着いた美学の頂点であったと思います。

Just be prepared for art films. Slow, strange, occasionally dazzling, more often incomprehensible.Unfortunately, the slipcase came semi-crushed in delivery and a good inch of plastic at the bottom right was shattered, though the discs seem ok.
